Bibi’s Churchillian Speech at the UN

In the wake of brilliant reporting in the Wall Street Journal on how the United Nations orchestrates an industry of lies against Israel, and massive protests outside of the United Nations, including multiple Democratic House primary winners, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin (“Bibi”) Netanyahu gave a Churchillian speech at the United Nations General Assembly. He defended the U.S.-Israeli relationship, showed how Israel has emerged from absorbing the greatest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust to taking the upper hand in a seven-front war, predicted the Iranian regime would fall, and debunked several of the lies against Israel.

Bibi credited the U.S.-Israel alliance, and the “bold leadership” of President Trump, for the success of the U.S.-Israeli joint efforts against Iran: calling out U.S. and Israeli joint airstrikes, he stated that “With our great American friends, we crushed Iran’s army, navy, air force and nuclear facilities” [he should have also mentioned Iran’s ballistic missiles and scores of Iran’s top leadership]. The prime minister stated that Israel has had to face a seven-front war since Oct. 7, 2023, consisting of “Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, Iran, militias in Iraq, militias in Syria, Palestinian terrorists in Judea and Samaria.” But instead of facing defeat, Israel “delivered crippling blows to all of them.” And Bibi has the receipts, once again demonstrating that Israel is the U.S.’s greatest force multiplier in the Middle East, and potentially the world. He mentioned that Israel has “hammered” Hamas and killed its leaders Mohammad Deif, Yahya Sinwar, and Ismail Haniyeh. (Israel also now controls approximately 70 percent of Gaza.) Bibi also stated that Israel has “pummeled” Hezbollah, which included the masterstroke beeper/walkie-talkie operations, assassinating Nasrallah, and taking out most of Hezbollah’s 150,000 ballistic missiles and rockets. Though not mentioned in the speech, Israel also conducted a massive decapitation strike on Houthi leadership, and Israel’s prevention, through covert pre-emptive strikes, of a Hezbollah copycat October 7 attack. Netanyahu stated that Israel is not a colonizer, and criticized Britain and France for calling the Jewish state such, despite the fact that “they invented the term” and that “their colonies spanned the globe.” He mentioned that Judea and Samaria (known by some as the “West Bank”) is “the heart of the historic homeland of the Jewish people.” He additionally stated that Palestinian terrorists “…try to murder our people, and in particular, they try to murder our people in our historic homeland, in Judea. By the way, that’s where the word ‘Jew’ comes from: Judea. That’s our land.” And yes, a mere cursory look at Biblical history, the history that gave rise to the holiday of Hannukah, and Jewish heritage sites including the archeological finds in Jerusalem will tell you as much. The Trump administration has also recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved the U.S. embassy there, and recognized that Israeli homes in Judea and Samaria don’t violate international law.

As an aside but related point, he debunked the canard of “settler violence.” He categorically stated that he “won’t stand for vigilantism. We’re a country of law, so we put our Shin Bet on [those criminals].” But Bibi points out that the Israeli bad actors account for “a handful of juvenile delinquents, about 150 in number,” which the international press picks up, contributing to “maybe two or three” casualties a year, while Bibi stated that the press ignores “thousands of [Palestinian attempted attacks] per year against peaceful [Jewish] families…” in Judea and Samaria. He called such press coverage a “distortion” and an “obsession.” (An unstated but perhaps implied point here is that the focus of the international press here is to illegitimize Jewish rights in Judea and Samaria, while ignoring Palestinian terrorism.)

The prime minister also cast shade on Syrian leader Al-Sharaa’s claim to the Golan Heights, stating that “Mr. al-Sharaa, you should know the Jews have been on the Golan Heights since the days of Moses. You can read it in the Bible.” Al-Sharaa (formerly “al-Jolani” in reference to the Golan) is a jihadist who has long dreamed of conquering the Golan (most recently at the same United Nations General Assembly meeting). Long before there was a “Syria,” and long before the Arab invasions of the Middle East, Jews were in the Golan. And the Trump administration recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Bibi stated that “[a]ccusing Israel of genocide is the greatest lie of the century.” Rather, Israel has taken “innumerable” steps to limit civilian casualties in Gaza. He quoted Colonel John Spencer, chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, who said: “Israel has done more to prevent civilian casualties in war than any other military in history.” He mentioned the great lengths to which Israel tried to limit collateral damage in its counter-war against Hamas, including distributing two million tons of food (which Bibi notes equals a ton of food for every Gazan), and sending text messages, phone calls, and leaflets to the civilian population warning them of impending strikes. On the other hand, Bibi mentioned that Hamas “did everything possible to keep Palestinian civilians in harm’s way, often at gunpoint,” and “used Palestinian civilians as human shields; […] hospitals, schools and mosques as terrorist command posts; [and] that it stole much of the food we let into Gaza.” Bibi also called out New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani for propagating the genocide canard, among other things. Finally, Bibi stated that Israel is fighting on an “eighth front,” which is the propaganda war. He points out that countries are spending billions to defame Israel, which includes Qatar and its funding of universities and Al Jazeera. He also accused Turkey and its leadership of being “a superspreader of anti-Semitic lies,” of “host[ing] Hamas terror chiefs,” and of calling for Israel’s destruction and boasting of plans to conquer Jerusalem. In total, Bibi gave a compelling speech in the face of his detractors (for those who did not leave the hall in protest, and for those willing to listen). He showed once again that Israel is America’s greatest ally in the Middle East, and that the Jewish State and the U.S. have emerged stronger in the war against Iran and its axis.
