The Trump administration seems to be intent on making the same mistakes that others have. President Trump’s “Board of Peace” (BoP) announcement that a deal had been made with Hamas whereby it would disarm in return for an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip is a perfect example.

Israeli withdrawal from Gaza is not a new concept. It goes back to the “Gaza Disengagement” of 2005 which was a unilateral action by Israel that involved evacuation of twenty-one settlements in Gaza and four in the West Bank. Beginning on August 15 and completed by September 12, 2005, it was comprised of a removal of about 9,000 Israelis.
Mr. Trump may not realize that he is repeating the mistakes of other administrations.
The “Palestinians” repaid the Israelis on October 7, 2023 by their genocidal Hamas attack on Israeli citizens which took about 1,200 lives and seized about 250 hostages. The war between Israel and Hamas that resulted is still going on.
While President Trump said that the BoP agreement will result in disarming Hamas and the other terrorists in the Gaza Strip (e.g., Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine, and others), it simply won’t happen. Hamas won’t disarm for several well-established reasons.
First and foremost, because Hamas’s bosses are in Tehran and the ayatollahs are trying to escalate the war between Iran and the U.S. They are firing missiles at U.S. bases, particularly in Jordan and have also struck at Egypt, which is a new step they have taken in recent days. Will the Iranians try to close the Suez Canal? They might do just that.
The Iranians are also arming and escalating the Houthis — who they also control — stepping up the Houthis’ hope of blocking the Red Sea to Saudi (and others’) oil shipments.
The Strait of Hormuz remains nearly closed while the Iranians insist on controlling it. We, in the meantime, have re-imposed a blockade on Iran’s ports.
Tehran won’t let Hamas disarm even if they wanted to, which they don’t, because their ideology requires the eradication of Israel. They also won’t disarm because by so doing it would give up its control of the Gaza Strip. Hamas was elected to govern the Strip in 2006 and it hasn’t given up control since. Nor will it. (The thought of a “new” group arising from the “Palestinians” to create a new government in Gaza is risible. Hamas will continue to rule regardless of whatever name the BoP agreement results in.)

The announcement by the BoP of a peace agreement in Gaza will have zero effect. Iran won’t allow Hamas to disarm and while they don’t Israel won’t withdraw from Gaza. The Gaza war isn’t a stalemate because Israel continues to attack Hamas, gradually killing off the people responsible for the October 7, 2023 attack. The Israelis won’t quit, which is a very good thing.
Mr. Trump has said that we want to win the war against Iran and that they will never be permitted to have nuclear weapons. He also said at a Friday cabinet meeting at Camp David, “We will be hitting them very hard … And you know at some point, they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore.’” He predicted that the regime will eventually “peter out.” But they won’t. The Iranian regime, or what’s left of it, will never give up because they are fanatics.
The increased U.S. military attacks on Iran are going to peter out because we are running out of munitions. Suppliers are faced with extended timelines to replenish our munitions. If we are to face up to those potential shortages, we cannot continue attacks at this pace. Trump has recently called off daily bombing attacks on Iran, ostensibly due to “progress” in negotiations. But if they resume as the war continues into its sixth month, we may run out of bombs and missiles to punish the Iranians.
As I have written elsewhere, we cannot stop now. We have to bring the Iranian regime to an end, which means ending their ability to function as a nation. We can bomb their bridges, power stations, missile launch sites, and more targets to bring them to their knees. But the regime has to be toppled — and the Iranian citizens restored to freedom — before this war can end.
So where do we go from here? Apparently nowhere. Mr. Trump has said that regime change is back on the table. It wasn’t on the table previously because Mr. Trump didn’t make it a goal in the war. He may finally realize that it is the only goal that can end this war. But he gives no sign of it especially in celebrating the BoP’s “agreement” which neither side will abide.
Mr. Trump may not realize that he is repeating the mistakes of other administrations. Even Bill Clinton is saying that he tried to give the “Palestinians” all of Gaza and most of the West Bank but they weren’t satisfied with it. Mr. Trump is under pressure on both sides of the issue: the Saudis, the UAE and Qatar are lobbying him to end the bombing and pursue a peace deal while other nations are lobbying him to go for broke.
Mr. Trump needs to wake up and smell the coffee because if the Iranian regime is left standing it will arm itself with nuclear weapons which we — and the rest of the world — cannot allow.
