Saving Masculinity From the Left and the Manosphere

There is no longer any serious dispute that our boys and men are in crisis. It’s an undeniable empirical reality, from plummeting male labor force participation and lagging educational achievement to disproportionate rates of suicide, homicide, and social isolation. What remains in dispute is how we got to this place and what to do about it.

When I wrote “Is ‘Fragile Masculinity’ the Problem with Our Men?” in the pages of The American Spectator in 2023, the primary battlefield was clear. That essay trained its sights on the progressive campaign to pathologize traditional masculine norms as arbitrary, harmful social constructs. But in the years since, the cultural landscape has undergone a seismic shift, necessitating an expansion of that analysis.

If we do not teach our boys and men how to be Shepherds, the beasts of the digital age will gleefully teach them how to be wolves.

While the progressive left’s efforts to dismantle and demonize manhood and masculinity continue apace, an equally dangerous threat has arisen. It is no longer enough to defend traditional masculinity against those who wish to deconstruct it. We must now also defend it against those who seek to distort and weaponize it.

Today, men are being forced to navigate a treacherous cultural strait; a proverbial passage between Scylla and Charybdis. On one side stands the progressive academic establishment: the Pathologists, eager to dismantle and demonize traditional, natural masculine instincts. On the other side lurk the secular Predators, the “manosphere” of hyper-individualistic influencers who promise empowerment but ultimately drag souls into a moral abyss.

What I want to argue here is that this is a false and ultimately dangerous choice. To rescue our boys and men, we must reject both and reclaim instead the classical, covenantal, Biblical model of the Shepherd.

The Pathologists: Snipping the Wires of Masculinity

To understand the dynamics in play here, it’s worth reviewing the prevailing secular-progressive paradigm: the doctrine of “fragile masculinity” or “precarious manhood.” This view operates on a simple premise: traditional masculine norms are oppressive social constructs with zero redeeming qualities. They are psychological straitjackets that induce “performance anxiety,” stifle emotional maturation, and breed aggressive, risky, self-defeating behaviors.

And since traditional masculinity is an arbitrary and harmful construct, it can and must be mitigated and ultimately eliminated. Believing there is no biological hard wiring, the Pathologists assume that snipping these wires ought to be easy and without downsides.

But it should come as no surprise that the sustained pathologizing of natural male instincts has not created a peaceful, gender-neutral utopia. This should be obvious to anyone looking with minimal curiosity or a modicum of humility. Instead, men have just been stripped of their purpose, leaving them culturally disoriented, deeply isolated, and highly vulnerable to exploitation.

The Predators: The Rise of the Hedonistic Transactional Beast

This brings us to the Predators. Human nature abhors a vacuum. Obliterating the traditional institutions that once socialized boys into responsible men does not eradicate masculine energy; it merely leaves it wild, unguided, and susceptible to deceptive claims.

Over the last few years, a highly lucrative subculture has exploded to fill this void. Led by red-pill gurus and “alpha male” brand-builders (most notably Andrew Tate) the secular “manosphere” pitches itself as a bold defense of masculinity, urging young men to “buck the system.”

In truth, this secular counterreaction is merely the mirror image of the pathology it supposedly fights. Where the Pathologist views traditional traits as toxic, the digital Predator celebrates them in their most caricaturized form.

Consider the archetype popularized by Andrew Tate and others. Manhood is defined not by character, duty or sacrifice, but by the relentless acquisition of material wealth, supercars, and hyper-sexual dominance. Relationships are zero-sum and transactional. Tate and his imitators explicitly reject marriage, family, and civic responsibility, viewing them as sucker’s bets that only limit personal freedom.

Ironically, both paradigms agree on a fundamental belief: that masculinity is inherently self-serving, domineering, and transactional. Leftists reject what they caricaturize as traditional masculinity because they find it abhorrent and destructive; those in the manosphere embrace their own view because they have learned that it is lucrative and empowering.

The Pathologist wants to chemically castrate the wild beast; the Predator wants to unleash it. Neither offers a model of a man who builds, protects, serves, or bears any resemblance to Godly masculinity.

Who Will Defend the Hive?

At its core, this dual-front crisis is the predictable result of institutional and covenantal decay. A healthy society operates like a structured community or a “hive” built on mutual obligation, transcendent truth and local associations. For generations, the hive was preserved primarily because young men were socialized to be its protectors.

In this sense, the Pathologist and the Predator are both poisonous expressions of modern hyper-individualism. The Pathologist seeks to separate the individual from traditional biological and moral realities. The Predator seeks to liberate the individual from all traditional duties and responsibilities. Neither seems to care much about the survival of the hive.

But it is self-evident that a society cannot long survive without protectors. When we demolish the institutions that once channeled masculine energy into constructive service, we are left with a culture in ruins.

The classical, Biblical model of manhood, the Shepherd, understands that masculine strength is neither an inherent evil to be deconstructed nor a weapon for self-aggrandizement. It is a divinely ordained resource to be disciplined for the protection and flourishing of others. True masculinity is not measured by what a man can extract, but by what he is willing to sacrifice.

The Shepherd is commanded to love his family and his wife “as Christ loved the Church,” a standard of absolute, self-sacrificing covenantal duty. He respects legitimate authority and holds the sacred boundaries of family, faith, and community as sacrosanct. This is the positive, constructive, Biblical model that our culture has forgotten, perverted and even demonized.

What to do? The first thing is some self-reflection. To be blunt, too many elements of the right have been duped or have allowed themselves to be enabled. In our eagerness to combat the woke Pathologists who still dominate our institutions, we were far too quick to cheer virtually any counterreaction. We saw digital influencers mocking progressive platitudes and convinced ourselves that they were allies in the defense of tradition. We were wrong.

By cheering on the unvarnished machismo of the manosphere simply because it “owned the libs,” we inadvertently helped feed the very Charybdis that is now drowning our boys and men. We forgot a foundational conservative truth: strength without a Shepherd is not virtuous; it is merely brute force. We must now have the courage to say so openly.

Alas, there are no easy answers. But this much is simple: if traditional, faith-grounded institutions remain silent, or if they offer only a watered-down, apologetic, therapeutic version of manhood, young men will continue to throw themselves into the jaws of the Predator.

We do not need less masculine energy in our society. We need far more of it, albeit properly shepherded and bound to covenantal, Biblical responsibility. We must actively rebuild institutions that socialize boys and young men into protective husbands, dedicated fathers, and honorable citizens.

The choice before us is stark and it is urgent. If we do not teach our boys and men how to be Shepherds, the beasts of the digital age will gleefully teach them how to be wolves. All that will do is offer validation to the left’s delusions and we’ll be even more stuck in this dreadful, vicious cycle.
