America’s Catholic bishops are calling on the Trump administration not to protect unaccompanied immigrant children. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is planning to make changes to how the HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which is responsible for the care of immigrant children encountered at the border or ports of entry without any parents or guardians, handles passing unaccompanied alien children (UACs) over to supposed parents or guardians.

Those rule changes include identity checks and verifying that the supposed parent or guardian has sufficient income to take care of the child.
After profiting from the misplacing of children with rapists, sex traffickers, modern-day slavers, and other monsters, it might be best for the USCCB to simply shut up.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), however, is against the new rules, intended to protect children. In a letter to Kennedy, the USCCB’s general counsel, William Quinn, rightly observed, “Unaccompanied children are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking, domestic servitude, and other exploitative situations. The Church considers it a moral obligation on the part of society as a whole to ensure that all children are protected from such harms, consistent with their God-given dignity.”
Quinn and the USCCB proceeded to characterize the proposed new rules as “creating excessive barriers to reunification and unnecessarily prolonging children’s stays in government custody” that could “exclude otherwise eligible parents and relatives from sponsoring children.”
According to the USCCB, noncitizens, by nature of their noncitizen status, have fewer options for obtaining identification than citizens, which the bishops and their lawyer argued may prevent noncitizens from reuniting with their children. So to distill the argument to its most idiotically simplistic terms, the USCCB is proposing that because identification verification may inconvenience some noncitizens (likely illegal aliens, as legal aliens would have easy access to identification documents), stringent safeguards should not be put in place to protect children.

Passing hundreds of thousands of children to complete strangers, without performing rudimentary identification checks, does not serve to protect anyone’s “God-given dignity.” Of note, at least 300,000 UACs went unaccounted for under the Biden administration: children were simply handed over to adults who showed up in search of children, for who knows what purposes.
Well, we actually do know for what purposes. An adult Ecuadoran national was arrested for fraudulently taking custody of a 15-year-old girl, who he had been sexually victimizing for at least two years. She was pregnant with his child. Two adult Guatemalan nationals were arrested for the rape and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl of whom they had fraudulently taken custody of. She also was pregnant. Three minors — ages 17, 16, and 15 — were found to have been sexually and physically abused by their sponsor. Another adult Guatemalan national posed as the brother of an alien minor, who he proceeded to rape and sexually abuse after gaining custody.
So far, an estimated 140,000 to 150,000 of the missing children have been located. Some have been rescued from hellish nightmares by federal authorities, others are still living lives of daily rape, physical and psychological abuse, slave labor, and other horrors. These are the sadistic situations permitted by the policies that the USCCB is suggesting.
It is also worth noting that the USCCB and its affiliate organizations not only played a role in “misplacing” thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children but were paid nearly $500 million for doing so. The USCCB alone has been paid over $250 million since 2008 to place UACs with sponsors.
After profiting from the misplacing of children with rapists, sex traffickers, modern-day slavers, and other monsters, it might be best for the USCCB to simply shut up, instead of recommending that potential sponsors not be vetted or even identified before taking custody of vulnerable children.
