America’s Catholic bishops were once the vanguard against such evils as abortion and same-sex marriage, contradicting the morally decadent cultural zeitgeist with zeal, clarity, and a compassion becoming of the title of shepherd. Today, the bishops largely promote poor policies, calling for the mass invasion of the U.S. by Third World immigrants and upholding progressive ideals of “equality.” For example, Bishop Daniel Garcia of the Diocese of Austin, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB’s) Subcommittee for the Promotion of Racial Justice and Reconciliation, issued a statement last week regarding the Voting Rights Act (VRA).

Garcia and the USCCB, however, have clearly bought into the left-wing premise that white Americans are inherently “privileged.”
“Today, many communities of color worry about how recent developments will impact their fair representation and future participation in the democratic process. Echoing our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, we affirm the value of democracy ‘insofar as it guarantees the effective participation of citizens’ as a reflection of their dignity,” Garcia wrote, implicitly addressing the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in Louisiana v. Callais neutering Section 2 of the VRA and allowing red states to redistrict and eliminate ridiculously-drawn “majority-minority” districts, which always favor the Democratic Party even in the reddest of red states.
“For decades, the U.S. bishops have advocated for the right of eligible citizens to participate fully in public life, including the protection of voting rights. We encourage all citizens to exercise their right to vote and urge policymakers to safeguard voting rights and promote fair representation for all,” the Texas-based bishop continued. “May we continue to work together for the common good and for a society in which all citizens are able to participate fully and faithfully in our democracy.”
As Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, a Catholic himself, explained in the Court’s decision earlier this year, the use of race-based districting is actually racially discriminatory. Allowing black voters and other minority groups to vote alongside their white fellow citizens is in no way discriminatory. Creating contorted, snake-like congressional districts comprised almost solely of black voters, on the other hand, is discriminatory. It discriminates against white voters on the basis of their being white.

Now, of course, there’s nothing wrong with the bishops confronting discrimination. In fact, the Catholic Church has a long history of upholding and defending the human dignity of victims of discrimination. One of the earliest existing exhortations against slavery comes from a Catholic bishop: St. Patrick authored his Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus in the fifth century, condemning the slave trade in which Coroticus and his men were involved. In the 19th century, Bishop John “Dagger” Hughes, the first Archbishop of New York, boldly defended American Catholics against discrimination, even threatening to burn down New York City if city officials allowed anti-Catholic demonstrations to devolve into violence against Catholics. The USCCB was also a leading voice against the wanton slaughter of the most vulnerable of all, the voiceless unborn, in their decades of stalwart opposition to abortion.
Ensuring that the image and likeness of God and the inherent human dignity which comes with it is respected and, where necessary, defended is right and just and a noble cause. Garcia and the USCCB, however, have clearly bought into the left-wing premise that white Americans are inherently “privileged” and that, in order to achieve “equality,” minority groups must be provided with their own privileges — privileges which are unavailable to white Americans.
The adoption of this frame of mind is deeply disturbing. Should it persist, the bishops, the successors to the Apostles and guardians of the Catholic Faith, will soon find themselves violating the very principles of the Gospel and joining Democrats in many of their most deranged propositions, calling to abolish prisons and “eat the rich.”
Leftism is a monster; it will hollow out your institutions, your society, your centuries-old religion and wear them as skinsuits, baring its crooked teeth in the smile of something you once knew and loved as it stares at you with hungry, hate-filled eyes through empty sockets. The virtue of mercy, which the bishops love so much, must be bounded by both charity (pursuing the ultimate good of the beloved) and justice (giving to one his due) or else it becomes nothing more than one of the tenets of leftism. The Catholic Church, ultimately, will survive any threat and will last to the end of all time, but the bishops may soon find themselves being worn as skinsuits by an ideology that would gleefully hurl them into gulags.
