“No kings” has become a rallying cry for the anti-Trump left and some anti-MAGA conservatives. The phrase is meant to convey the notion that President Trump is ruling the United States as a monarch. On the No Kings website, the organization brags about their “events in all 50 states” that constitute in their minds “a sustained national resistance to tyranny.” They compare themselves to the American patriots who resisted the tyranny of Great Britain’s George III 250 years ago.

Their website sets forth a list of Trump’s sins — an indictment similar to Thomas Jefferson’s list of grievances against King George in the Declaration of Independence. Trump’s administration, they write, “is sending masked agents into our streets, terrorizing our communities.” It accuses Trump’s government of “targeting immigrant families, profiling, arresting, and detaining people without warrants.” Trump is “threatening to overtake elections … gutting healthcare, environmental protections, and education.”  Trump rigs maps “to silence voters,” ignores school shootings, raises the cost of living while giving money to billionaires, and launches missile strikes abroad using tax dollars. “The president,” they say, “thinks his rule is absolute.”

But unlike Jefferson’s allegations in the Declaration, the No Kings claims are false. Federal agents are masked in some instances because groups that share the No Kings’ ideology frequently post the names, faces, and addresses of federal agents, exposing them to harm — those agents are masked for their own protection. And those same agents are not terrorizing our communities; they are making them safer. Trump is not targeting “immigrant families,” but is enforcing federal laws against migrants who are unlawfully in the United States.

He is not “gutting healthcare” nor undermining environmental protections, and is not gutting education. Instead, he is attempting to remove woke DEI policies that have infiltrated our healthcare and educational systems, and is trying to end needless environmental regulations that stifle economic growth. And Trump is not “threatening to overtake elections” (whatever that actually means). Instead, he wants to ensure that the all-too-flexible pandemic-inspired election practices of 2020 are never repeated again.

As a victim of at least three assassination attempts, Trump can hardly be said to ignore school shootings or shootings in our communities. In fact, he has offered assistance to mayors in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Memphis, and elsewhere to quell such violence. Those communities are being terrorized by violent criminals, and in some instances the cities’ political leaders have refused help from the “king,” presumably because they share the ideology of the No Kings movement. And as for Trump helping billionaires — most billionaires support Trump’s opponents. Trump’s supporters are the very people who are being terrorized, not by federal agents, but by violent criminals in their midst.

If Trump is a king, he is a strange king. What absolute kings or rulers do you know that are stifled seemingly every day by liberal judges (and some conservative judges) who have blatantly become part of the anti-Trump crowd? What king or ruler has to struggle endlessly to get nominations to important posts confirmed by the Senate? What king or absolute ruler is continuously hounded by opposition lawfare at every turn? What king or absolute ruler puts up with a blatantly biased media that seeks to undermine him and all of his policies?

“No Kings” is part of the liberal, progressive movement in this country. Liberals, or progressives as they like to be called, have a history of supporting liberal presidents who have wielded much greater executive power than Trump ever has. They supported the “imperial presidencies” of, for example, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt, but complained about the “imperial presidency” of Richard Nixon. Wilson and Roosevelt came closer to kingships than Nixon or Trump. Wilson and FDR took executive actions (shutting down newspapers, prosecuting political opponents, incarcerating ethnic groups suspected of disloyalty) that would make Trump blush. “No kings” is simply a pose the left makes to smear a president and a political movement they abhor. They are “No kings” except for progressive ones.
