Spain: Pedro Sánchez Declares Border War on His Own Country

Last week’s invasion of the Spanish cities Ceuta and Melilla by hordes of North Africans has triggered a unified response from Europe but not the one that the European Union’s ruling globalists want. The presidents of 22 EU countries signed a letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen denouncing Spain’s recent legalization of over one million illegal migrants and court decisions protecting illegal border crossings as “pull factors” responsible for the mayhem that has sent shock waves throughout the troubled continent. Tens of thousands of military-aged males, dumped at border points by the truckload, burst through Spanish frontier gates, climbed over flimsy wire fences, and swam around token sea barriers into Ceuta, overwhelming the local population and undermanned security services. They torched cars, looted stores, and burst into private homes. Spain’s army was finally ordered to intervene when groups crowded into the ferry terminal connecting Ceuta with mainland Spain.

“We have a duty to effectively deter and relentlessly combat illegal migration, by coordinating our action, strengthening our external borders and addressing all policies that can serve as pull factors, such as the regularization of a very large number of irregular migrants,” stated European leaders in a joint declaration reflecting the growing rejection of permissive migration policies palpable throughout Europe.

Italy’s president, Giorgia Meloni, has called for excluding Spain from Schengen agreements allowing free movement between EU countries. Her unprecedented move to close entry to travelers from Spain has been openly backed by Denmark and Finland. Genuflecting progressive French president Emmanuel Macron has kept silent, but his police are tightening controls and quintupling the number of Gendarmes at the Spanish border.

Spain’s socialist president Pedro Sánchez, who poses as the very model of a modern euro technocrat, now finds himself at odds with the centrist leaders he tries to mimic. He didn’t respond to his European colleagues in the apologetic exculpatory fashion one might expect from a statesman accidentally caught in a crisis. “In the current international context, the European Union cannot afford this kind of selfish, polarizing and unlawful reaction,” implored Sánchez.

But more police had to be deployed to protect Sánchez from enraged Spaniards calling him “traitor” and “sonuvabitch” as he arrived to meet with Ceuta authorities than to guard the broken border. Thousands of protestors also gathered outside Socialist Party headquarters in Madrid demanding Sánchez’s resignation.

True to the globalist authoritarian template by which leftist leaders cling to transnational bureaucracies for legitimacy while ignoring the will of their people, Sánchez doesn’t budge. Not only has he staunchly refused to call elections despite cascading scandals involving his party’s corrupt relations with Venezuelan narco-dictator Nicolás Maduro. He brazenly rejects near-unanimous calls to alter migration policies that his minority government has forced on Spain — and the rest of Europe — by decree. According to government sources cited in Spanish press reports, Sánchez was warned weeks in advance by Spain’s intelligence service (CNI) that a migrant invasion was imminent. Spain’s security services had presented a strategy to strengthen border defenses around Ceuta and Melilla following a border breakout in 2021. Sanchez ignored it, the same as he more recently rejected joining a body formed by European governments to coordinate and strengthen border protection.

A former Spanish diplomat who held senior positions at the U.N. told The American Spectator that border erasure and social engineering to erode traditionally rooted national constituencies are ideas emanating from progressive circles within transnational bureaucracies, with powerful tentacles in key governments and the media. It’s shared by Britain’s Labour government, which is driving the U.K. towards virtual civil war with mass migration accompanied by measures clearly intended to Islamize the country to bake in support from the growing migrant population. It’s lately taken to dumping large groups of migrants in England’s conservative rural communities where once tranquil country villages are now experiencing surging crime and sexual assaults. But the scheme is running into stiff resistance throughout the rest of Europe, where right-leaning parties are riding into power in one election after another on a wave of popular revulsion with the EU’s transformational zeal. France’s anti-migration National Assembly party is widely expected to score a landslide victory in presidential elections next year, despite persistent lawfare waged against its leader, Marine Le Pen. The letter to von der Leyen denouncing Sánchez was signed by leaders of Germany, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and even the freshly elected star liberal prime minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar.

But von der Leyen keeps protecting her Progressive Spanish poster boy, who is one of the few remaining pillars of the globalist bureaucracy she presides over, that shares Sanchez’s estrangement from Europe’s public mainstream. Like a capricious empress from Europe’s distant past, she hounded Hungary’s Viktor Orbán from office over his opposition to EU migration policies, LGBTQ+, and climate regulations, but “congratulated” Sánchez for his handling of a self-generated crisis that shocked the continent.

Migration is an area where EU rigidity shines. Some European countries have been lobbying von der Leyen’s Commission to extend the time that Americans and other visa-free travelers can remain in Europe from three to six months. The bureaucrats have a problem with that, but not with bringing in African hordes to stay indefinitely.

Sánchez claims that the African invaders have left to go back to Morocco. But the Epoch Times reported Monday, based on interviews with local Ceuta residents, that many remain and more continue swimming in.

The Spanish newspaper La Razón reports that thousands of “minors” have been sheltered at the local CITE Welcome Center and other asylum facilities where the undocumented adolescents will eventually receive passes to enter Spain and circulate freely in Europe.

The Spanish press revealed on Tuesday that at least a dozen known Islamic terrorists were identified among the invaders, who included hundreds more with criminal records. But Spain’s military is now facing criticism from EU-funded NGOs for harsh measures employed to force them out of Spain.

President Trump compared events in Ceuta to scenes at the U.S. Mexican border during the Biden administration, saying that “unchecked immigration is killing Europe.” The U.S. State Department issued a stern note more aligned with the European public than the EU Commission and its leftist ideologues:

“The unacceptable incident [in Ceuta] is a direct result of the Spanish Government’s deliberate efforts to enable and facilitate mass illegal migration into Europe. We are considering actions to defend Americans at home and abroad from this threat and stand ready to assist other European allies considering similar options.”
