AOC Freezes Her Eggs: A Political Calculation or Cultural Symptom?

Over the weekend, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a series of updates to her Instagram story documenting her experience with hormone injections to start the process of freezing her eggs for future use.

Serving in public office for seven years, the 36-year-old Congresswoman is well past the mean U.S. maternal age for first birth, which was 27.5, according to recent data. Although Ocasio-Cortez has been engaged to her fiancé, Riley Roberts, since 2022, she has no children. In a recent ABC interview, Ocasio-Cortez refused to rule out a presidential run. When asked about a Granite State poll showing her leading the Democratic field in New Hampshire, she insisted she is focused on upcoming congressional midterms. However, regarding 2028, she added, “I haven’t ruled out the possibility,” noting that “anything is possible.”

While managing a pregnancy during a grueling presidential campaign would pose obvious logistical challenges, Ocasio-Cortez framed her decision around current reproductive politics and the current administration’s views on the sanctity of human life. In her videos, she accused the Trump administration of being “dedicated to politicizing women’s bodies and taking our choices away from us and punishing us around decisions to be pregnant or not be pregnant.”

Her public transparency drew mixed reactions. While supporters praised Ocasio-Cortez for destigmatizing fertility treatments, critics questioned the cultural impact of promoting assisted reproductive technologies like egg freezing and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet argued on X that Ocasio-Cortez’s posts elevate progressive career-first values over the natural desires for family and children. “This is the message progressives spread when it comes to family formation, and one of the reasons why fertility rates are cratering,” he said. In essence, Kolvet stated, the message Ocasio-Cortez promotes is, “Just freeze your eggs, kids! Pursue that career, even if you’ve been engaged for 4 years to a man you’ve known since college.” Kolvet added that pushing women to delay marriage and family in pursuit of career goals represents “a cautionary tale” rather than female liberation.

Beyond political commentary, bioethicists point to deeper moral questions surrounding assisted reproduction. Theologian Dr. Carl Trueman has written extensively on human dignity in a culture obsessed with individualism and commercialism. Critiques like Trueman’s contend that, left unchecked, technological fertility risks treating children as commercial products and parents as consumers who can pick and choose between the most viable eggs. Notably, Ocasio-Cortez listed “genetic testing” in her videos as a key reason women choose to undergo egg-freezing procedures. Trueman additionally posed a critical question: “Is the embryo that tests positive for Down syndrome a person with rights or a substandard product to be thrown away?” Although once thought unthinkable, recent social media posts have told a different story of how current culture views the weakest members of society.

Ocasio-Cortez concluded her posts by arguing that current restrictions leave women operating out of “fear and insecurity.” Yet for others, the push to turn reproductive biology into a public political statement exposes a deeper, more concerning cultural shift, one where the unborn are treated as a commodity, and the already born are considered completely sovereign over the lives of others.
