How many assassination attempts will it take before the TDSers will stop comparing President Trump to Adolf Hitler? On the website of The National Interest, owned and operated by the Center for the National Interest, its editor Jacob Heilbrunn uses a review of Timothy Ryback’s book 53 Days: How Hitler Dismantled a Democracy to once again raise the specter of Trump as Hitler. And Heilbrunn does this without even mentioning Trump’s name. But his message is clear: “recalling the Nazi era remains as pertinent as ever.”

Heilbrunn is too clever by half…. [H]e leaves not so subtle literary crumbs for the crazy Left and TDSers to follow on the road to the Trump is Hitler conclusion.
Ryback, who writes for the anti-Trump Atlantic magazine, is much more explicit on podcasts about the similarities and “disturbing echoes” between Trump and Hitler. Back in 2024, Ryback told one interviewer that he felt a “sense of relief” with Kamala Harris as the prospective Democratic Party presidential nominee, and was hopeful that “democracy in America still has a chance.” Ryback said that there are “some rather disturbing rhymed couplets” between Hitler and Trump.
Heilbrunn in his review of Ryback’s new book tries to obscure the obvious comparison to Trump by noting in his last paragraph that the German populist AfD Party “dismisses the need for atonement of the Nazi past” and seeks to subvert Germany’s democracy. But Heilbrunn’s real target is Trump. First, he praises Ryback for offering “a timely reminder that Hitler and his camarilla did not engage in an illicit seizure of power, but, as the Nazis themselves liked to emphasize, openly obtained it by constitutional means.” Donald Trump, of course, also returned to power by constitutional means by winning the popular vote and electoral college vote in the 2024 election, proclaiming proudly that he won every swing state.
Next, Heilbrunn notes that Hitler attacked the press, purged the civil service, imposed tariffs on many countries, attacked the central bank, and denuded the German federal parliament of its powers, implementing what Heilbrunn refers to as “Project 1933.” Sound familiar?

Trump has frequently called out the press in the United States for its clear biases against him and his administration. And Trump’s “Project 2025” (actually, the Heritage Foundation’s project but attributed to Trump as his master plan) involved levying tariffs on many countries, proposed changes to the Federal Reserve (our central bank), and promoted the dismantling and reshaping of federal agencies (the civil service).
Hitler, Heilbrunn writes, targeted the German civil service, “or, if you prefer, the deep state.” The Nazis, Heilbrunn quotes Joseph Goebbels as saying, “were ‘cleaning house,’” and placing their own people in power, claiming that they had been victims of an illegitimate Weimar government “and that it was time for payback.” Trump and his allies, who have been victims of the “deep state” in Washington (the Russia Hoax being just one example) have called the Biden administration “illegitimate” and, like every presidential administration in the United States, have placed loyal allies in positions of power in Washington. And the Left accuses Trump of using the powers of the federal government to persecute his political opponents.
Hitler tried to overthrow Weimar in the November 9, 1923 putsch, which would if successful first topple the Bavarian government then culminate in a “march on Berlin.” When the putsch failed, Hitler sought power by legal means. Heilbrunn and the Left in this country accuse Trump of mounting a putsch on January 6, 2021 (he didn’t), and when that failed Trump ran for reelection and gained power by legal means. And Hitler only rose to power legally, Heilbrunn explains, because conservative German officials colluded with him. The Left in this country constantly criticize establishment Republicans for colluding with Trump out of concern for their political survival.
Heilbrunn is too clever by half. Perhaps worried by the odious nature of explicitly comparing President Trump (the victim of multiple assassination attempts) to Hitler, he leaves not so subtle literary crumbs for the crazy Left and TDSers to follow on the road to the Trump is Hitler conclusion. The ownership and officers of the Center for the National Interest should be ashamed.
