Francesca Hong always struck me as the type of person who gives out carrots instead of candy on Halloween. My physiognomy-based interpretations apparently find validation in the Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate’s own words.

“I don’t allow myself to work Halloween weekend or the day of,” Hong, a restaurant worker, wrote in 2019. “I would actually ask every single person in costume to leave.”
She elaborated this week in objecting to the unhealthy candy distributed to children and acknowledged that she just is not a very fun person.
Why not call for a 40-mile-per-hour highway speed limit and a ban on yoga pants?
Well, Hong’s distaste for Halloween extends to other holidays celebrated by the people she presumably wishes to vote for her. Not just Halloween but so much of the calendar vexes Hong.
She said of Valentine’s Day that “the worst of humanity comes out from folks ‘celebrating’ on another day capitalism tells you how to show love.” On July 5, 2020, she posted: “Why isn’t there a curfew on fireworks?” She felt “slightly attacked,” she confessed, at seeing a Christmas tree image on her laptop.
“Cancel Thanksgiving,” Hong tweeted five years ago. “Should have done this in 1621. If it takes a worldwide pandemic for us to realize we should stop celebrating colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed indigenous folx and women, so be it.”

Even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders decline to endorse Hong.
She initially refused to disown this view on CNN. Then, Politico.com interviewed her in an effort to allow her to pivot, and she called Thanksgiving her favorite holiday and stuffing her favorite Thanksgiving dish. This seemed more honestly dishonest than other attempts to flee from past proclamations. Does she stand by her endorsement to defund and abolish the police? An intelligent person senses she does because she answers by qualifying her answer with “right now,” and instead of responding to whether we should abolish the police, she notes that we cannot abolish the police. In using legalistic language that allows her to mislead the public, Hong actually shows herself as more dishonest, not less. (RELATED: You Simply Cannot Give Power to Lunatics)
Even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders decline to endorse Hong. Sanders diplomatically described the state representative from Madison as “nice” but explained that he knows very little about this Wisconsin race. Though the grand-poohbah socialists keep their distance, rank-and-file Wisconsin Democrats love her. The latest poll, commissioned by Marquette Law School, showed her with more than double the support of Mandela Barnes, who has since dropped out, and with more than quadruple the support of the best-performing Democrat still in the race.
How can an Almira Gulch killjoy who trashes such American traditions as Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July, and trick-or-treating own such a commanding lead among Wisconsin Democrats?
Francesca Hong disturbs not because of what she believes but precisely because of what she reflects. She acts as a mirror that exposes not-well-hidden hatreds many Democrats feel for their own country. She leads among Wisconsin Democrats not in spite of her anti-American tics but because of them.
