The shooting guard for the Indiana Fever is having liberals cry foul for an exclusive interview with ESPN on July 21st, where she came out in support of states banning transgender athletes from youth sports and protecting women’s sports from trans men who want to compete.

The former McDonald’s All-American and 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Champion is no stranger to national controversy, as she became a household name for tackling an opponent who poked her all-star teammate Caitlyn Clark in the eye. She was recently quoted as saying, “Everyone wants to look the same. Everyone wants the same vibe. Screw that. I’m gonna be me.” And she’s willing to speak truth to power even if it comes at a cost.
In an era where athletes and celebrities suspend their beliefs to satisfy the liberal elite, Sophie Cunningham is leading by example.
Now that Cunningham’s views on men in women’s sports have been made public, she received an unnecessary amount of vitriol from the LGBTQ+ activists and liberal commentators referring to her as a “transphobe”, “bigot”, and a “trash human being.” She was even accused of “inciting fans” with a rally for her support before a game against the Seattle Storm, which was labeled “Anti-Trans.”
As unfortunate as these remarks are, there’s been no real attempt to dispute what Cunningham said. Instead of engaging in a thoughtful, honest debate of the issue at hand, the keyboard warriors are upset that she gave her balanced criticism of males competing in female sports.
Unsurprisingly, Cunningham has stuck to her principles and refuses to waver while facing intense scrutiny from the media. “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans,” she told ESPN. “And I’m like, ’I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest, and I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Of course, Sophie Cunningham is correct. There needs to be protection for women athletes, especially young girls, from the danger that males could impose by inviting them into the same league. This was the broadly accepted view on both sides of the aisle until far-left progressives began demanding that the rest of society conform to their preferences.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Cunningham was dragged into controversy last year over a similar issue where she claimed it is “probably true” that certain 8th-grade boys could beat a WNBA team. Naturally, her view was taken out of context to make it seem like she was trashing her own league. All she did was state the scientific fact that biological differences between the sexes contributes to different physical standards. For most athletic endeavors, these differences give men a competitive edge over women.
The WNBA star is being tagged by the media as “MAGA Barbie” even though she’s explained that her political views are more in the center. To her, the matter at hand isn’t political but rather having morals and standing firmly on those regarding fairness in women’s sports, and that issue is “common sense,” as she puts it. Luckily, the American people agree.
As the 2025 Gallup poll shows, 69 percent of Americans believe that “transgender athletes should only be allowed to play on sports teams that match their birth gender.” Likewise, the Pew Research Center survey found that 66 percent of American adults similarly favor or strongly favor laws in effect that would “require trans athletes to compete on teams that match their sex assigned at birth.”
Not only is the public’s opinion on Sophie Cunningham’s side, but so is her market value. Her player-exclusive Adidas Crazy Energy PE sneakers sold out in both men’s and women’s sizes within the first hour of their release—no doubt fueled by her status as a rising star in women’s basketball, but also by the strong branding she has built as a defender of women’s sports.
It’s even got the attention of the White House, as the Trump Administration fully supports Sophie Cunningham’s views. Acclaimed author and anti-trans activist J.K. Rowling has taken to social media to support Cunningham and defend girls from trans athletes. In the sports media landscape, you have ESPN sports analyst Stephen A. Smith proclaiming that Cunningham is “1,000 percent right” on this matter.
In an era where athletes and celebrities suspend their beliefs to satisfy the liberal elite, Sophie Cunningham is leading by example, demonstrating that you can speak truth to power and do so gracefully. She has not been hateful but rather has spoken with facts and logic out of love and compassion. The cultural tide may be turning, and we are going to need more outspoken figures like Sophie Cunningham to lead the charge to protect women and girls.
