How did you spend America\u2019s 250th birthday? New York\u2019s socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, spent it lecturing America\u00a0about racism\u00a0and xenophobia while his wife attended an\u00a0Islamic \u201cspiritual wellness\u201d retreat.<\/p>\n

It was another\u00a0reminder of the ugly\u00a0rise of socialism in America.<\/p>\n

Last month, a socialist\u00a0named Darializa Avila Chevalier won a congressional primary\u00a0in New York\u00a0despite\u00a0praising communism\u00a0and calling America a\u00a0\u201cf\u2014king disgrace.\u201d\u00a0In Colorado, socialist college\u00a0student Melat Kiros\u00a0defeated long-sitting Democratic representative Diana DeGette in her primary race.\u00a0(RELATED: When the \u2018World-City\u2019 Votes Socialist)<\/strong><\/p>\n

This has set off alarm bells across the country as conservatives gear up to fight another generation of socialists. (RELATED: The Return of Socialism and the GOP\u2019s Golden Opportunity)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Socialism is having a moment in America, but as the sheer toxicity of the actual socialists shows, it\u2019s likely to be short-lived.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

For starters, the socialists have mostly been winning Democratic primaries, not elections to Congress or even the town dogcatcher office. This indicates that Democrats are moving further left \u2014 which we already knew \u2014 but not the country as a whole.<\/p>\n

In fact, only\u00a0a\u00a0little over a\u00a0quarter of Americans\u00a0say they\u2019d\u00a0even consider voting for a democratic socialist. Under a third said\u00a0they see socialism in a\u00a0\u201cvery favorable\u201d or even\u00a0\u201csomewhat favorable\u201d light.<\/p>\n

Imagine that: decades of university indoctrination, hip socialist influencers, righteous anger over corporate abuses \u2014 yet socialism remains radioactive to the vast majority.<\/p>\n

Americans vote not just at the ballot box\u00a0but\u00a0with\u00a0their feet, and they\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0overwhelmingly\u00a0moving\u00a0to states that are less socialist. By far, the\u00a0biggest trend in American migration is people\u00a0leaving blue states for red states, seeking lower taxes and lighter regulatory burdens.\u00a0(RELATED: \u2018Reverse Okies\u2019 and Blue State Refugees \u2014 Another Wave Appears To Be Building)<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that some of these red tape refugees bring leftist political beliefs with them \u2014 \u201cdon\u2019t California my Texas!\u201d \u2014 but socialism?<\/i>\u00a0At least in practice, they\u2019re\u00a0rejecting it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0worth remembering that America has had far more resounding\u00a0socialist moments than the mayor of New York and a handful of primary-candidate\u00a0fruitcakes. Bernie Sanders became the first out-and-proud socialist to win a Senate seat in 2006. Socialist ideas in general\u00a0got more traction in the 1930s and 1960s than today.<\/p>\n

Thousands of socialists have been elected to city councils, mayoral offices, and even Congress since Karl Marx put poisonous pen\u00a0to bloodstained paper. Yet a socialist consensus has never taken hold in America, and this is what counts.<\/p>\n

The U.S. no longer has an adversary like the Soviet Union to remind us why socialism doesn\u2019t\u00a0work. Instead, an\u00a0ex-socialist adversary (China)\u00a0now mimics our market-oriented policies.<\/p>\n

China used to be socialist, but in the 1980s it adopted market reforms that it dubbed \u201csocialism with Chinese characteristics.\u201d Today, this essentially means\u00a0state-directed capitalism, very different\u00a0from what the Mamdanis\u00a0of the world support.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t\u00a0expect American leftists to learn from China\u2019s failed socialist experiment, which begat Mao Tse-tung and mass murder. But if modern China gets its way, then\u00a0the U.S. will become\u00a0even more dependent on Chinese exports, prices will go up,\u00a0and American jobs will vanish.<\/p>\n

I doubt today\u2019s\u00a0pampered socialists will be okay with\u00a0that<\/i>. Global competition has a way of clarifying who Americans are, and competition with China should remind us that we succeed when we\u2019re not socialist.\u00a0(RELATED: Champagne Socialism Comes to America)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Look at space. NASA spent decades building rockets by committee. Then a private company, SpaceX, came along and did it faster, cheaper, and better \u2014 landing boosters upright like something out of science fiction. Let\u2019s see China do that.<\/p>\n

And when\u00a0China\u2019s state-controlled tech giant Huawei proved a threat to\u00a0American national security\u00a0by controlling too much of the globe\u2019s AI and 5G capabilities, the\u00a0Trump administration\u00a0waved through\u00a0a merger between two American\u00a0companies, HPE\u00a0and Juniper Networks.\u00a0This created\u00a0a\u00a0new U.S. tech company with the global scale to leave Huawei\u00a0in the dust.<\/p>\n

It was a reminder of\u00a0who we are. Americans value\u00a0competition, creativity,\u00a0freedom,\u00a0innovation, and the progress of free enterprise.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0why we\u2019re\u00a0the world\u2019s number one exporter\u00a0of energy. It\u2019s\u00a0why we lead the world on AI. And there\u2019s\u00a0nothing a few\u00a0dingy socialists can do about it.<\/p>\n

In his 4th of July speech, Mamdani declared that America is a place of \u201cmonopolies that dominate every industry,\u201d \u201coligarchs who buy elections,\u201d and \u201cmasked agents terrorizing our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n

That dystopia might exist in his\u00a0mind. But for most Americans, it calls to mind a certain Russian experiment in socialism they\u2019d\u00a0prefer to leave in the past.<\/p>\n
