The point of the fair wasn’t just to share culture and inventions between the 36 countries that participated (although they did get a cameo); rather, it was primarily intended to celebrate the massive amount of progress the United States had made in its first 100 years, and to brag about it in front of the whole world. Bell was an excellent candidate. Not only was his ability to send voice through wires astonishing, but he’d become a U.S. citizen a few years earlier, and he was immensely proud of it.

Unlike the modern fair or Silicon Valley exhibition, the World Fair in 1876 was quite an elegant event. Imagine walking into any of the Smithsonians only to be met with a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people decked out in suits, ties, and full-length gowns — in a word, their Sunday best.

Those planning this year’s semiquincentennial celebrations are certainly taking a page from that book. Take the Great American Fair, which will hold its opening ceremony on the National Mall in just about a week. Numerous exhibitions are set to celebrate the agricultural, mechanical, technological, and artistic achievements this country has made in the 250 years since it declared its independence. Unlike its 150-year-old ancestor, though, the Great American Fair isn’t going to be an event many will describe as “elegant.” The final day of the fair (July 4) will feature not only a massive national birthday bash, but also (courtesy of the man capable of holding perhaps the most electric rallies since the preachers of the Great Awakening) “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all.” (LISTEN: The Spectacle Ep. 431: UFC Fight Shows American Greatness at the White House)

If last weekend’s UFC match on the White House South Lawn and previous Trump rallies are anything to go by, it’s going to be quite the event.

As one might expect, the familiar naysayers are at it again. Take, for instance, the leftist cultural influencers who headlined the “Rise Up, Sing Out” rally they held as a counterprogram to the president’s UFC match. “Our country isn’t so lovable right now,” Robert De Niro told his audience to the tune of cheers. “I hate to say it, but loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser.” Meanwhile, over at the New Yorker, Arthur Krystal felt obliged to absolve himself of the necessity of engaging in love of his country — after all, per his historical research, the term arose out of the French Revolution, and Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, and George Bernard Shaw all distrusted patriotism.

It’s true that Krystal and De Niro hardly represent the most convincing statement of the anti-patriotic argument — they’re merely the most newsworthy and culturally visible examples — but the present culture is where the disagreement currently lies.

Others, less radical than De Niro and Krystal, took issue (perhaps understandably) with the Trumpian flavor of the birthday celebrations. “Any previous president — from either party — would make this event about our nation. But not Trump. He makes it about himself. Because he only cares about himself,” U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle told the Philadelphia Inquirer. At the Free Press, the editors complained that, in all the planned programming — whether it comes from the Left or the Right — “Trump, not America, is the real star of the show.”

It is a particular tragedy that, in a year that should be marked by uncountable patriotic overtures, we’re squabbling over whether the thing itself is even good. If we can agree on that, we quarrel over how exactly to express it.

In his brief history on patriotism, Krystal conveniently seems to have skipped over the Romans — a striking omission considering our own Founding Fathers considered that republic a model for our own. Cicero, for instance, referred to his country as the “common parent of all,” and considered it only right to selflessly dedicate all he was to its service. “We are not born for ourselves alone, but our country claims a share of our being, and our friends a share,” he wrote in De Officiis. (READ MORE: On Providence and Presidents: Happy Birthday, President Trump)

Read more The Unfathomable Horror of Britain’s Rape-Gang Holocaust

A century and a half later, Thomas Aquinas (someone else Krystal neglected to mention) famously explained (tempering Cicero just a bit) that love of country is a requirement of justice. We are debtors, first to God, then our parents, and finally our country. “Wherefore just as it belongs to religion to give worship to God, so does it belong to piety, in the second place, to give worship to one’s parents and one’s country,” he wrote in his famous Summa Theologica.

Aquinas has an unnerving habit of making common sense feel intuitive, and he does so here. It’s true that we don’t choose our country, but we also don’t choose our parents, and yet justice demands we love and honor both.

Patriotism is simply this: to love one’s country. Not because it is good (after all, we love our parents and few of them are truly saints), but because it’s given us our culture, our way of life, the ideas in our heads, and even the language to express them. De Niro and Krystal, who both owe their career and the platform from which they speak to the freedoms promulgated and protected by the nation they criticize, display a disgusting lack of gratitude in their refusal to even consider patriotism a virtue.

But what about those who love their country but think that putting a couple of boxers in a ring on the lawn of the White House like ancient gladiators or hosting a presidential rally on the semiquincentennial anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is maybe not the best way to express that love?

They might have a point, but it will depend on how the Trump administration handles it. America does like to celebrate loudly, that’s fine, but if the spectacle doesn’t point towards something real it becomes nothing more than a pointless shadow. G. K. Chesterton, a contemporary (and frequent critic) of Shaw, made precisely this point in his essay In Defense of Patriotism: It’s unfortunately easy to extol the extraneous features of our country without ever bothering to love their source.

This is the lynchpin to the whole thing: to love America requires that we love the things that make our country distinct and even great.

Unfortunately, many Americans have been taught not only to adopt a sense that they are merely citizens of the world, but also to develop a profoundly embarrassed ingratitude to this great country. Chesterton, puts it even more bluntly: “We are the children of light, and it is we that sit in darkness. If we are judged, it will not be for the merely intellectual transgression of failing to appreciate other nations, but for the supreme spiritual transgression of failing to appreciate ourselves.”

The primary event the Trump administration is planning has yet to be accomplished. There’s still a chance to make the whole thing about stirring up true patriotism in the hearts of Americans — after all, in the words of the president himself, the rally will “honor our Country’s People, Spirit, Strength, Resolve, and Triumphs.” If he can stick to that theme, the rally at the mall might manage to evoke the kind of patriotism that runs deep enough to be engraved on tombstones.

There is, in windy Baddeck, Nova Scotia, a massive boulder staring out at the deep blue Bras d’Or lake. It marks the graves of the man who invented the telephone and his wife, who chose the spot for its stunning beauty.
