I<\/span>n a <\/span>book excerpt<\/span> from Vice President JD Vance\u2019s upcoming memoir, he shares that his wife Second Lady Usha Vance\u2019s agreement to welcome their fourth child was inspired by Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. In a conversation between Usha and Erika, Erika lamented only having two children with Charlie. According to JD, this changed Usha\u2019s previously reluctant stance on having more children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The day following her late husband\u2019s assassination at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025, JD <\/span>offered his plane<\/span>, Air Force Two, to help escort his body to Arizona. The Vances <\/span>assisted Erika<\/span> in the immediate aftermath of Charlie\u2019s murder and met with his mother, father, and sister. JD commented that witnessing Erika\u2019s raw grief <\/span>changed \u201csomething\u201d<\/span> in Usha, and she became pregnant soon afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JD <\/span>lamented<\/span> that he had lost his \u201cbest friend and closest confidant in the world of politics.\u201d He <\/span>said<\/span>: \u201cOne life was stolen from us, but another was given. I don\u2019t know why God does things like this. But I am grateful to Him that there will soon be another source of joy in our lives. Another person added to the communion of our family and hopefully to that of the Church. Another person to whom I will sing, \u2018Jesus loves me, this I know.\u2019 Another beautiful soul to wonder at and fall in love with God\u2019s beautiful creation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with NBC, <\/span>Usha shared her thoughts<\/span> on trying for a fourth child: \u201cPeople have asked me if we\u2019re going to have a fourth baby, and I\u2019ve never closed the door on that \u2026 I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought \u2014 I didn\u2019t feel quite done, right? So I really wanted to have a third child,\u201d said Usha.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JD reflected on the influence of Charlie on his life, saying, \u201cHe talked about the joy that came from fatherhood, the joy that came from raising a family\u2026. And that is the way that I\u2019m gonna honor my friend, is to be the very best at that most important job that I can be,\u201d <\/span>he said<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vances will be the first second couple to welcome a baby while in office since <\/span>1870<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JD is living by his word. He <\/span>previously commented<\/span>, \u201cI want more babies in the United States of America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
