N<\/span>ew York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s administration announced last week that it will open a municipal clinic that is the first of its kind: It will provide free \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care to people who identify as \u201ctransgender.\u201d<\/p>\n

You may have thought that such a ridiculous usage of city resources would have been music to the ears of the city\u2019s LGBTQ activists. But of course not.<\/p>\n

According to transgenderism-focused Substack Erin in the Morning<\/em>, Mamdani\u2019s opening of the clinic \u201cis as likely to be seen as a betrayal as it is a meaningful advancement of his promises.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because the clinic will only serve adults who are age 19 and older. That simply isn\u2019t enough for LGBTQ activists, who want to ensure young children can receive medical treatments intended to make them (loosely) resemble the opposite sex.<\/p>\n

New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin received backlash for this restriction at a city council budget meeting last week.<\/p>\n

Councilmember Tiffany Cab\u00e1n decried the \u201cdevastating decrease in services for youth, and especially youth under 13, 12\u201d and asked Martin if the Mamdani administration is considering expanding its gender services to include \u201cyouth care.\u201d Cab\u00e1n added that she hears \u201call the time\u201d from parents who don\u2019t know where to take their children to transition them.<\/p>\n

Martin answered that the Mamdani administration \u201cwant[s] to make sure that we provide the services and resources for youth,\u201d but that it also wants to ensure that it doesn\u2019t \u201cexpose [itself] to clawbacks from the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was far from a sufficient excuse for Erin in the Morning<\/em> and its readers. Mamdani\u2019s campaign promises to ensure children could transition are going \u201cunfulfilled,\u201d the Substack argued.<\/p>\n

Mamdani has not taken \u201cenforcement action\u201d against New York City hospitals that have put their youth transgender programs on pause, Erin in the Morning<\/em> complained. This is despite the fact that, during his campaign, Mamdani participated in protests of NYU Langone for its decision to cut its \u201ctransgender\u201d care program for children and \u201cexplicitly pledged to hold the hospitals that deny transgender youth care accountable for their capitulation to Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erin in the Morning<\/em>\u00a0was especially upset that Mandani\u2019s denial of \u201ccare\u201d to anyone under 19 used \u201cthe exact age cutoff from Trump\u2019s anti-trans executive orders.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Substack explained that while the announcement of the transgender clinic may make it look like the Mamdani administration is \u201cfinally delivering,\u201d in fact \u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

LGBTQ activists are also upset over the fact that, though Mamdani pledged $65 million for \u201cgender-affirming care,\u201d the money has seemingly not appeared.<\/p>\n

Aviva Stahl reported\u00a0in Prism<\/em> earlier this year that the promised $65 million \u201chas not been explicitly allocated.\u201d This has left activists \u201cwondering,\u201d even as they celebrate Mamdani\u2019s creation of the \u201cOffice of LGBTQIA+ Affairs,\u201d Stahl said.<\/p>\n

U.K.-based LGBTQ news site Pink News<\/em> is also displeased by Mamdani\u2019s exclusion of children from his transgender city clinics. Its top headline Thursday complained \u201cZohran Mamdani\u2019s new transgender care clinic will not provide care to trans people under the age of 19.\u201d<\/p>\n

LGBTQ Nation<\/em> similarly headlined its coverage \u201cZohran Mamdani is opening a gender-affirming clinic. But it\u2019s already banning trans youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

One commentator on Erin in the Morning<\/em>\u00a0concluded: \u201cDemocrats talk big, but in reality, they are weak. We can\u2019t depend on weak leaders to protect us. Trans genocide is real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another person said, \u201cThis is a complete betrayal of every trans person who voted for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
