O<\/span>n Tuesday morning, <\/span>President Donald Trump named<\/span> Bill Pulte, the current director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as the new acting director of National Intelligence. Trump noted Pulte\u2019s experience managing \u201cthe safety and soundness of the Markets\u201d as his qualifications for the new role.<\/span><\/p>\n

This news follows Tulsi Gabbard\u2019s unexpected resignation from her role as director of National Intelligence, effective June 30. Gabbard <\/span>announced on X<\/span> in May that she would be leaving her position to support her husband, Abraham, following his diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer. Gabbard wrote on X that her tenure as DNI was focused on \u201cadvancing unprecedented transparency and restoring integrity to the intelligence community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, Pulte serves as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and he is chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two government-sponsored enterprises. Trump noted in selecting Pulte that these enterprises have recently seen an increase of \u201cover 10 Trillion Dollars \u2026 a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago.\u201d Pulte\u2019s work managing the housing administration involves overseeing almost 51 million residential home mortgages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pulte will continue in his former positions, as his DNI role is effective on a limited 210-day acting basis under the <\/span>Federal Vacancies Reform Act<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responses on Capitol Hill to Pulte\u2019s appointment have been mixed. In response to the appointment, Vice President JD Vance <\/span>posted his enthusiastic approval<\/span>, saying Pulte \u201crecognizes that the bureaucracy of the intel community must respond to the elected leadership (rather than the other way around).\u201d Additionally, <\/span>Dr. Mehmet Oz, Trump\u2019s health officer, commented<\/span> his confidence in the appointment, noting Pulte \u201cis a very sharp, quick study of people, their emotional abilities and their ability to persevere in the face of hardship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, not all Republicans share JD Vance\u2019s ardent support of Trump\u2019s pick. <\/span>Sen. John Thune of South Dakota said<\/span>, \u201cWe don\u2019t need a weaponized DNI. We need professionals there.\u201d He continued by noting, \u201cAgain, I just heard about it. I\u2019ll try and get more information about the current state of their thinking about that position.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many other Republicans are puzzled<\/span> by what qualifications a housing director brings to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. \u201cThe best I can tell you is he\u2019s not qualified, but I don\u2019t know anything about him other than that,\u201d Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy from Louisiana stated. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina took issue with Pulte\u2019s fraud allegations against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. He said, \u201cI got a real issue with that. I think it\u2019s a waste of time and money that he appears to have been part of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
