T<\/span>o get a sense of how bereft the Democrats are of genuine principles, a good place to start is their defense of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. This is the \u201coyster farmer\u201d they hope can unseat five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. And, in that cause, they are willing to overlook a lot of controversies surrounding Platner. Among these is the tattoo of a Totenkopf, the insignia of the Nazi SS, which he sported on his chest for 18 years. Yet, when Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) was asked about Platner on ABC News, he feigned \u201cconcern\u201d then pivoted to President Trump: \u201cThis man is dangerous, and it\u2019s time that we take back the Senate. And that\u2019s what I\u2019m focused on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham Platner is incontrovertibly a depraved, deceptive imposter. He is no more qualified to be a United States Senator than he is to work alongside genuine oystermen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

The Nazi tattoo is by no means the only noxious element in the cloud of controversy that follows Platner around. It has been previously reported that he has engaged in lewd acts in portable toilets, attacked a Purple Heart recipient as someone \u201cwho didn\u2019t deserve to live,\u201d has a still-active account on an app called KiK, apparently used for hookups with underage girls, sexted with numerous women outside his marriage, ad infinitum. Yet, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) posted, \u201cI am proud of @grahamformaine for having the character to stand up against the war in Iran, against genocide, and against an unfair & lopsided economy. I am proud of him for having a vision for a new deal for our time. Excited to campaign with him on June 5!\u201d<\/p>\n

After extensive write-ups appeared in the New York Times<\/em> and the Wall Street Journal<\/em> about Platner\u2019s sexual antics, he posted what amounts to a hostage video of his wife defending him on X: \u201cI\u2019m feeling angry today and I don\u2019t normally make public statements, but it\u2019s really important for me to tell all of you out there, especially people who are voting in Maine, that I think it\u2019s shameful behavior to spend time, and energy and resources on negative ads and negative stories on Graham when all he\u2019s trying to do is improve the lives of people.\u201d She added, \u201cI confided deeply personal details about my marriage to someone I considered a friend.\u201d This was a reference to Genevieve McDonald, the primary source for the New York Times<\/em> article:<\/p>\n

Ms. McDonald was one of three campaign officials who resigned in October after revelations about controversial social media posts by Mr. Platner and scrutiny of a tattoo widely recognized as a Nazi symbol \u2026 Ms. McDonald shared with The New York Times<\/em> what she said was a screenshot of a text message exchange with Ms. Gertner that started in the early hours of Aug. 27, 2025. Ms. Gertner had sent a message to a broader group, asking someone from the campaign to contact her, and Ms. McDonald offered to talk. In their conversation, Ms. Gertner told her about the messages, which she described as \u201csexting,\u201d according to Ms. McDonald.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nonetheless, prominent Democrats like Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn) still defend Platner. On Sunday, CBS\u2019s Margaret Brennan poses a Platner question to Sen. Murphy about the ongoing sexting scandal. And, like Sen. Booker, he quickly pivots to an attack on Sen. Collins and President Trump: \u201cCharacter, also involves standing up to people who are bankrupting and corrupting this country, and this race is going to be a contrast between somebody that put his life on the line for this country, against somebody that is literally empowering the moral hollowing out of our nation from The White House.\u201d The accusation that Sen. Collins is somehow empowering President Trump to morally hollow out the nation is, of course, utterly ridiculous.<\/p>\n

Over at NBC, it\u2019s much the same story. Kristen Welker addresses the Platner sexting scandal within the panel discussion at Meet the Press<\/em>. Former Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) responds by pivoting to Texas: \u201cWell, let me go back to Texas for just a moment. Cornyn was a beloved candidate beloved by Republicans in Washington and in Texas. I\u2019m not sure that candidate flaws matter as much as they used to. Millions of dollars were spent to save Cornyn. Didn\u2019t work. Paxton won by a landslide.\u201d Her point seems to be that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is just as weird as Graham Platner. This is absurd, but it\u2019s important to remember what happens to heretics in today\u2019s Democratic Party. Eoin Higgins explains at The Intercept<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Rep. Jake Auchincloss, a Massachusetts Democrat, was confronted with this new reality earlier this week. He told CNN on Monday that he hoped Maine voters would reject Graham Platner, the state\u2019s presumptive Democratic nominee for Senate, over his controversial tattoo, which Auchincloss called \u201cpersonally disqualifying.\u201d Critics quickly pointed out that the congressman was effectively offering a tacit endorsement of Sen. Susan Collins, the milquetoast moderate Republican incumbent who has for years infuriated Democrats \u2026 Regardless of what happens in Maine, Democrats need to take back the Senate and I\u2019ll keep working hard to make it happen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

By the next day, Higgins points out, the congressman had been bullied into issuing a mea culpa on X and vehemently denied that his remarks were an endorsement of the Republican in the race: \u201cSusan Collins is a rubber stamp for the worst admin in history. Claims that I would endorse her, implicitly or otherwise, ignore my track record supporting Democrats to take back both chambers. As I said months ago, I find Platner\u2019s Nazi tattoo and his commentary about it personally disqualifying. If it were me I\u2019d vote for someone else in the Maine Democratic primary.\u201d This illustrates why centrists are a dying breed in the Democratic Party. Rep. Auchincloss cannot hope to survive if he doesn\u2019t toe the party line.<\/p>\n

Graham Platner is incontrovertibly a depraved, deceptive imposter. He is no more qualified to be a United States Senator than he is to work alongside genuine oystermen. Yet, because he appears to lead Sen. Collins in the general election polls, as reflected in the RCP average, the Democrats will allow no criticism of him, no matter what he says or does. The good news is that Sen. Collins, as annoying as she can be, has defeated far better men than Platner. If his numbers crash due to the latest scandals, that is when the Democrats will stop defending him.<\/p>\n
