J<\/span>ust a few weeks ago, Michigan\u2019s Democrat attorney general, Dana Nessel, addressed a gathering of Michigan Jewish Democrats.<\/p>\n

The normalization of Jew-hatred within her party has had Jews all over the U.S. on edge, especially those who embraced the Democrat agenda as the practical expression of their Jewishness. Having little acquaintance with the ocean of Jewish literature, they had little knowledge of anything deeper in their Jewishness. They were unprepared for the wave of hatred that crashed upon them, hell-bent on setting down the rules of what may be said and thought on the American Left. The rantings of their own candidate for Michigan\u2019s open Senate seat (before they were scrubbed to conceal his real agenda) have been enough to stir some positive thoughts about the Second Amendment.\u00a0(RELATED: <\/strong>Abdul El-Sayed Rewrites the Meaning of \u2018Democrat\u2019 in Michigan<\/strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nessel thought she had a winning message to these stunned Dems: Be selfless and virtuous! Even if your worries about danger to Jews and the Jewish state are real, even if the issue is your own survival, the Democrat agenda is more important. In other words, the Jews should commit suicide so the Green New Deal can survive.\u00a0(RELATED: The Questions We Must Ask About Islam)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nessel displayed her biblical illiteracy by citing Queen Esther\u2019s willingness to risk her own life as the example. But Esther did not undertake to ignore the threat to her people\u2019s survival. Quite the opposite: in order to win her people\u2019s survival, she had to put her life on the line, not ignore the threat, or capitulate to it. That she did, and the threat was destroyed, not her people. Spooked by a sense of impending catastrophe, people desert the middle ground where society thrives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Nessel was advocating something out of the darkest recess of the Left\u2019s modern history: the self-obliteration of millions to uphold Stalin. Osip Mandelstam was quoted by his wife as saying: \u201cStalin doesn\u2019t have to cut heads off. They fly off by themselves, like dandelions.\u201d And often, the condemned ones condemned themselves and thanked Stalin with apparent sincerity before they were executed.<\/p>\n

In our great struggle against the Axis tyrannies, we knew the difference between courage and suicidal despair.<\/p>\n

In the fight against the Nazis, in the days before D-Day, George Patton talked to his troops about what they should be doing. In defense of the most important of the natural rights cited by the Declaration, the right to life, you don\u2019t win by aiming to lose your life. As Patton put it: \u201cNo bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nazis had started their war against the Jews long before they declared war on America. Jews were a ripe target. They had law and culture, but no army. When the country to which they belonged, in whose service so many had fought with distinction in two wars, turned on them as their enemy, they had no means to defend themselves.<\/p>\n

German antisemitism (a name a German antisemite had invented to sound more respectable than \u2018Judenhas \u2014 Jew hatred\u2019) had focused on this fact. It taught that Germany would be exalted if it got rid of its Jews. The morally lazy naturally try to project and outsource all their difficulties and faults to an identifiable Other \u2014 an Other they intended to make expendable.<\/p>\n

The Nazis made Judenhass the center of their politics, portraying the Jews as the cause of Germany\u2019s misfortune. When they attained power, they prioritized their war against the Jews above all other fights. It started first with Germany\u2019s own Jews, whom they deliberately immiserated to spur them to leave \u2014 and to leave their property when they left.<\/p>\n

The great majority of those who managed to leave were young, naturally ready to make a new start. The older population that stayed was subject to depression, deprived of their family and left alone facing the demise of their hopes and all they had worked for.<\/p>\n

A natural result of this was suicide. Nazism was a religious doctrine that portrayed Judaism as a parasitic culture that was now doomed, exposed as a miserable fraud. Hitler\u2019s dramatic success was trumpeted as evidence that the end of the Jews was coming, an ending of the Jews\u2019 entire history and peoplehood. With no defense against the onslaught of Nazi propaganda, without the presence of their loved ones, the ones left behind were vulnerable to despair.<\/p>\n

Delighted, the Nazis cheered them on. The man in charge of the program of genocide, Heinrich Himmler, made it clear that spiritual murder was part of the plan:<\/p>\n

If they choose to end their own lives, it merely spares our men the trouble of dealing with them later. It is the natural reaction of a race that realizes its historical role is over.<\/p>\n

Himmler saw things in a demonically religious mode. Others saw it more practically. Chief among these was Hermann Goering, whose interest was in material enrichment rather than mystical aims. He was upset not that the Kristallnacht pogroms of 1938 had killed so many Jews, but that they had destroyed valuable property he had hoped to confiscate. Whether Jews left, were murdered, or killed themselves mattered little so long as their property remained to be taken. Goering said:<\/p>\n

\n

I\u2019d rather you had beaten to death two hundred Jews than destroy so many valuable assets!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Germany\u2019s Jews had enjoyed full participation in modern Germany. After the atrocities of the First Crusade\u2019s serial spree of mass killings in the Jewish communities along the Rhine, after multiple horrors during the later Middle Ages and the wars over the Reformation, Germany after the Enlightenment emerged anew as a place where Jews thrived. In science, there were such eminent figures as Einstein, Max Born and Lise Meitner in physics and Hermann Minkowski in math. Rabbinic studies flourished. Philosophy had such lasting names as Hermann Cohen, Martin Buber, and Franz Rosenzweig.<\/p>\n

When the Nazis took over, the largely assimilated Jewish population was in disbelief that such a thing was really happening. My father-in-law, of blessed memory, was a professor in Berlin at the time, and he had an invitation to teach in an American college which would get him out of Germany around May 1940. His friend, Rabbi Leo Baeck, head of the Berlin Jewish community, told him not to worry \u2014 it would all blow over \u2014 this after seven years of ever-increasing persecution. Such a deeply intelligent man simply could not believe that civilization could be dissolved so quickly.<\/p>\n

So it was with many, disoriented and in despair at the whipsaw change from integration in high-level civilization to isolation in a regime of systematic barbarity.<\/p>\n

Philosopher Martin Buber at that time sought the advice of a man who had a reputation for standing up for the underdog \u2014 Mohandas Gandhi. He wrote a long letter describing the situation in Nazi Germany. Gandhi, who was seeking to keep the Muslims a part of what he hoped would be a united India, wrote back that it would be best if the Jews committed suicide \u2014 advice that suited his political aims the same way the Jewish suicide suited the various aims of Goering and Himmler.<\/p>\n

Gandhi failed in India. The splitting off of the new Islamic Republic of Pakistan was accompanied by violence and death on a grand scale \u2014 approximately a million deaths. His advice to suicide didn\u2019t help the Jews or his dream. It won\u2019t save the Democrats\u2019 agenda, powered by a catastrophism that is more catechistic than empirical. It will do nothing to protect the Jews against the very real danger that Nessel tacitly admits is fighting to control her party and our nation.<\/p>\n

Spooked by a sense of impending catastrophe, people desert the middle ground where society thrives. It is a proclivity as old as humanity.<\/p>\n

But there is ancient wisdom to help us stay the course. Two millennia ago, a teacher named Hillel addressed the issue and taught that neither extreme self-negation nor extreme self-assertion can suffice. He put it this way:<\/p>\n

\n

If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
\nIf I am for myself only, what kind of a person am I?
\nAnd if not now, when?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hillel teaches that we must first recognize the gift of our own life. Especially in our day of over-extended childhood, we can\u2019t wait for others to take care of what is uniquely ours to tend. If we shirk responsibility for our own lives, someone who is not for me at all will take my life over \u2014 and perhaps, everyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n

But just the same, if we treat our own life as if it alone has value, we might preserve ourselves, but what we preserve will be hellish. Our greatest and most permanent happiness comes from responsibilities towards others freely accepted and joyously fulfilled. We find ourselves by choice part of something greater and more intensely true to who we are. We find common cause and purpose with all others who value freedom.<\/p>\n

And there is no time to waste. We must live together with others from our fully internalized sense that our fellows are creatures of the Almighty, just as we know ourselves to be.<\/p>\n

Then we know that if some humans go off the rails and dedicate themselves to the destruction of others, we must join together to defeat them, not kill ourselves, politically or actually, in a supreme act of futility.<\/p>\n
