The great German automaker is in peril largely due to the decision of European political leaders to impose an all-electric future on the European auto industry. But VW’s dire situation also stems from its eager embrace of that vision. Volkswagen acquiesced to the EV mandate without any pushback, pledging to be all-electric in Europe by 2035, and all-electric globally soon thereafter. Unfortunately for Volkswagen, the European Union allowed the import of cheap EVs subsidized by the Chinese government to capture much of the (forcibly-compelled) EV market in Europe.

Read more Something Worse Than $4 Gas

So, VW found itself both losing market share with its legacy internal combustion (“ICE”) gasoline vehicles, while also not gaining traction with its electric offerings. (RELATED: How Not to Save Money on Gas)

The EU is now backing off some of its most stringent EV goals, and “the EV transition” is effectively dead in the United States. Volkswagen has been given a fresh opportunity to focus on vehicles that it has historically built and sold profitably. But like an alcoholic who keeps seeking solutions that don’t involve giving up the bottle, Volkswagen’s management reflexively pursues new EV ventures, despite its persistent failure in that market space. (RELATED: Two Roads to the Same Communism)

Electric vehicles have proven to be nothing more than a boutique product in the United States — the free world’s largest vehicle market.

As to how bad the VW situation is, its global sales were about 11 million vehicles per year in the late 2010s. By 2025, that number was down to 9 million, and despite the EV commitment, not even 1 million of those sales were electric vehicles. Now, in 2026, the bottom has fallen out, and sales are projected to decline another 6 percent to about 8.5 million global sales this year. Even worse for VW, its gross per unit has also collapsed, from a historic profit of 9 percent to just 4 percent now, as it struggles to sell EVs at a profit.

As the situation worsens, VW executives have had no choice but to slash production and reduce model lines. In July, CEO Oliver Blume stated, “The global situation has continued to deteriorate over the past 12 months. That is why we are acting now.” With production cuts come job cuts, and speculation has the number of Volkswagen jobs to be eliminated at around 100,000.

As reported in Auto Blog a few days ago, the “unthinkable” is about to happen; leaked supervisory board documents reveal that management is now proposing to shut down four major VW manufacturing plants in Germany.

Read more A Massachusetts Jury Legalized 4th Trimester Abortions

In the U.S. market, Volkswagen has suffered a 10 percent decrease in sales volume since the late 2010s, due in large part to its catastrophic commitment to electric vehicles. In 2019, VW committed to an all-new EV plant in Chattanooga, alongside its existing ICE plant, with the intent to build more than 100,000 of its all-electric ID.4 vehicles per year. The plant was built, and the cars started rolling off the assembly line, but the buyers never showed up at dealerships. By late 2025, the ID.4 was the slowest-selling car in the U.S., with sales below 100 per month, and dealers sitting on a 527-day supply of vehicles in an industry where a 60-day supply is ideal. The situation was so dire that VW was effectively giving its unsaleable EVs away with a $99-per-month lease promotion. Volkswagen finally terminated U.S. EV production in early 2026.

Unbowed by its EV failure in North America, VW continues to plow its precious capital into other U.S. electric boondoggles. Rivian is an EV startup company that planned to sell hundreds of thousands of units per year — its business plan depended on it. Instead, Rivian is struggling to sell a fraction of that volume, and it has lost more than $24 billion since going public less than 5 years ago. Inexplicably, Volkswagen has given Rivian a $6 billion lifeline, including $1 billion just a few months ago, while at the very same time VW was weighing which of its own models to cut and what plants to close.

Even more preposterous is the fact that Volkswagen is building yet another all-new American plant to build yet another all-new EV, a pickup truck this time. Despite Ford losing tens of billions of dollars with its failed effort to sell an electric version of its popular F150 pickup truck, Volkswagen is proceeding full-speed ahead with its own electric pickup. Although Volkswagen is not known for pickup trucks, it did buy the rights to the Scout marque, the name under which International Harvester once sold small trucks. The last Scout was sold more than 45 years ago. Anyone who ever bought a new Scout is a Baby Boomer or older. Due to its quirky design and low sales volume, the Scout is remembered mainly as a novelty vehicle, if remembered at all. But the original Scout was an ICE vehicle. VW’s new iteration of the Scout is only going to be electric. Some models will have a gimmicky gas-powered range extender, but there will not be a Scout for sale with a traditional gasoline engine.

The EV market peaked in the U.S. at less than 10 percent market share, even when there was a $7,500 per unit federal tax incentive and a de facto governmental mandate. Electric vehicles have proven to be nothing more than a boutique product in the United States — the free world’s largest vehicle market.

In the U.S., Volkswagen has the opportunity to sell the vehicles Americans want to buy, but instead, it keeps investing in the vehicles that anti-freedom globalists in Davos want it to sell. In Europe, VW has an obligation to fight the regulators to save its legacy business model. Instead, Volkswagen is acquiescing to a future which will not include German auto manufacturing.

Volkswagen will never pull out of its doom loop until its leadership refocuses on selling gasoline-powered vehicles, and demands that regulators in Europe allow it to do so. If it doesn’t, there will be major political repercussions in Europe when VW starts shutting down plants due to the disastrous EV detour.

Read more The Lesson of 9/11

READ MORE from Buck Throckmorton:

The $40 Trillion National Debt and the ‘Budget Hawk’ Ruse That Led to MAGA

Natural Gas, AI, and the Industrial Boom Nobody Wants to Talk About

Repealing the 17th Amendment Would Save… John Cornyn

[77

post-1930","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-at-large
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
