A<\/span>re We at War with Iran?<\/p>\n

Are we at war with Iran? Both President Trump and Vice President Vance don\u2019t seem to think so.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Mr. Trump said that the Iran war is not a \u201cmilitary conflict\u201d because he thinks it\u2019s \u201csmall potatoes\u201d for the United States and \u201cvery intermittent.\u201d On Thursday, Mr. Vance said, that \u201cI wouldn\u2019t call it a war \u2026 Right now, there is no active shooting.\u201d Perhaps, at that minute, there wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

We are stuck in the stalemate as long as the president is unwilling to fight to win.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Messrs. Trump and Vance can be excused for not understanding that the Iran conflict is a war. Mr. Trump never served in the armed forces and Mr. Vance only served as a public affairs officer in the Marines, with one six-month uneventful tour in Iraq. He probably faced no more danger than I did when I served in the Air Force in the 1970s, at the tail end of the Vietnam War. The only danger I was exposed to were paper cuts in the law library.<\/p>\n

The conflict in Iran certainly seems to fit the definition of war. Carl von Clausewitz, the 19th century Prussian military officer and war philosopher, wrote, in his book. On War<\/em>, that war \u201cis thus an act of force to compel our enemy to do our will.\u201d<\/p>\n

We are trying to impose our will on Iran to never develop nuclear weapons and stop sponsoring terrorism. We are doing so by blockading its ports, blasting its economy with sanctions and trying \u2014 unsuccessfully \u2014 to get the Iranian people to revolt against the Tehran regime.<\/p>\n

Iran, in turn, is shooting at U.S. warships and other ships in the Strait of Hormuz and trying to mine the waterway to prevent traffic through it. Iran has fired missiles at U.S. bases in the Middle East causing several casualties. The most recent attack was comprised of a launch of three missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier. It was unsuccessful. We responded by attacking three oil tankers.<\/p>\n

Messrs. Trump and Vance should think of the 18 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen who have, so far, died in this war. Their parents, siblings, and friends shouldn\u2019t have to believe that they died for nothing.<\/p>\n

So we are, in truth, at war with Iran. It is an undeclared war, Congress never having been asked to declare war on Iran. The Authorizations for the Use of Military Force (AUMFs) that Congress enacted to authorize the Afghanistan and Iraq wars do not cover the fight in Iran.<\/p>\n

The question is what we do from here and whether we do it.<\/p>\n

Fighting to bring Iran to the negotiation table is a hopeless cause. We know, from their history, that the ayatollahs\u2019 regime will never abide by the commitments they make in any diplomatic agreement. We should, therefore, be fighting to win not to negotiate.<\/p>\n

We are, like Russian President Putin\u2019s war in Ukraine, stuck in a stalemated war with Iran. That stalemate cannot go on forever.<\/p>\n

So what can Mr. Trump do to end the stalemate?<\/p>\n

He cannot simply declare victory and come home. He has spent too much of America\u2019s prestige and military might to do that.<\/p>\n

He cannot wait for Iran to expend enough missiles and drones to effectively disarm the regime. The regime has a substantial arms stockpile at hand now, and they are probably being resupplied by Russia and China for him to do that.<\/p>\n

He cannot wait for help from the NATO nations. They have made it exceptionally clear that they will not intervene.<\/p>\n

To win this war, as this column has said, we need to bomb Iran to the point where it can no longer function as a nation. To do that will take a long time, probably past the November mid-term elections here. And that, for a variety of reasons, Mr. Trump seems unwilling to do.<\/p>\n

We are stuck in the stalemate as long as the president is unwilling to fight to win. We can win this war but only if we are willing to invest more time, more resources, and more of our military might.<\/p>\n

We, and the Israelis, have a lot riding on this war. We know that Iran regards the United States as the principal evil in the world. And we know, thanks to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, that radical Islam \u2014 which defines Iran \u2014 is our principal enemy.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump would do better to listen to Mr. Rubio and win this war. If he does not, the world will, eventually, be faced with a nuclear-armed Iran. And that, as the president has said repeatedly, is not something we, or the world, can settle for.<\/p>\n
