O<\/span>ne of the gravest evils facing the modern world is that of surrogacy. More than 100 years ago, Americans fought a brutal and bloody war that hinged largely on the issue of slavery. The purchase and sale of fellow human beings is an abominable practice, but it is not just some barbaric chapter of ancient history. No, the slave trade is alive and well today, it simply goes by the name \u201csurrogacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poland\u2019s Catholic bishops recently explicated the moral and civilizational threat posed by surrogacy.<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t stop there. If surrogacy is not confronted forcefully and resolutely, it will, like abortion, evolve into some greater evil.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSurrogacy is by its nature evil and incompatible with Christian faith and morality,\u201d the Polish Bishops\u2019 Conference said in a recent statement. \u201cThe desire to have children cannot be interpreted as a right to have children, because a child, in the ontological sense, as a human being, is not the property of its parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the expansion of surrogacy profiteers in Poland, the bishops said that the practice cannot \u201cbe tolerated, permitted, accepted, or, even less so, promoted by state institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The world of surrogacy is rife with horror stories to underscore the bishops\u2019 point. In Canada, a same-sex couple is suing a surrogate mother for not aborting the baby that they had purchased from her. According to reports on the case, the same-sex couple wanted the baby\u2019s life terminated when he was diagnosed with a cleft lip.<\/p>\n

Even in the most sadistic tales of the slave trade, the murder of a purchased child because of a superficial \u201cdefect\u201d would be almost cartoonishly cruel.<\/p>\n

In Texas, the state has had to (Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton led the charge) to protect another baby from being condemned to death by the \u201cparents\u201d purchasing the child via surrogacy. Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed demanded that surrogate mother McKenna West abort the baby boy in her womb after the child was diagnosed in utero with a serious heart condition usually necessitating surgery.<\/p>\n

Paxton\u2019s office demanded that the U.S. courts dictate that the baby boy be cared for properly upon his birth.<\/p>\n

These are only a handful of examples of the depravity of surrogacy. Even on the slave plantations of the Deep South in the 18th and early 19th centuries, no plantation owner would demand that an ill slave on display at auction be murdered; at worst, he simply wouldn\u2019t buy the slave. For all the \u201cadvancement\u201d and \u201cprogress\u201d of the modern world, surrogacy is a far harsher and more lawless world.<\/p>\n

Of course, it isn\u2019t much of a surprise. Why shouldn\u2019t children be treated as accessories to be bought \u2014 or discarded \u2014 at the whim of adults? After all, for decades, unborn children have been treated as objects to be discarded (slaughtered via abortion) whenever they are inconvenient. Abortion has succeeded on a sickening scale in dehumanizing children.<\/p>\n

For evidence of the extent of the abortion mindset, one need only look at the sensational Lindsay Clancy trial. The Massachusetts mother has spent the past several weeks on trial for the methodical murder of her children: five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan. Clancy admitted in court to sending her husband out of the house on an errand so that she would have enough time to take her children into the basement, one by one, and strangle them to death, wrapping exercise bands around the throats of her own flesh and blood and watching as the life left their eyes.<\/p>\n

Rather than condemn Clancy for the sadistic and carefully-planned murder of her children, women around the country rallied in defense of the murder-mom, blaming the brutal killing of her children on postpartum depression, stress, hormones, prescription drugs \u2014 anything but Clancy\u2019s diseased soul.<\/p>\n

So pervasive and so effective is the culture of death, enthroned atop a mountain of the skulls of millions of aborted babies, that only one juror in the Clancy trial refused to acquit her, triggering a mistrial. The other 11 jurors would have declared Clancy \u201cnot guilty.\u201d Imagine that: out of a relatively random sampling of modern-day folks, 11 out of 12 would let a woman walk free after brutally slaying her own children. Only one would suggest that she should perhaps face some kind of consequence for her actions.<\/p>\n

Surrogacy is nothing but the natural evolution of abortion. If unborn children can be quietly injected with lethal drugs or dismembered with scalpel and forceps and dumped in a trash bag because they are \u201cunwanted,\u201d then why shouldn\u2019t they be bought and sold when they are \u201cwanted\u201d? Or, if the buyer doesn\u2019t like the make and model, throw it out and try again, make the best one that money can buy.<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t stop there. If surrogacy is not confronted forcefully and resolutely, it will, like abortion, evolve into some greater evil. \u201cWhy stop with unborn children?\u201d the slave traders of tomorrow will ask. \u201cIf you can buy, sell, or kill an unborn child, why not buy, sell, or kill a toddler or a teenager?\u201d<\/p>\n

While not everyone today would agree that progressivism is evil (I certainly would), it is irrefutable that evil is progressive: malcontent to remain stagnant, it lurches and spills from one atrocity to another, each one worse than the last. We need not learn how heartbreakingly, terrifyingly evil the culture of death could become. We do have the option of simply putting a stop to it.<\/p>\n
