F<\/span>lags mark the dead in Maidan Square at the center of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Thousands of Ukraine\u2019s banners are joined by others from Taiwan to Peru and Belarus. One international fighter who gave his life for Ukraine is marked, at his insistence, with the flag of the French Empire under Napoleon, complete with the seal of the House of Bonaparte.<\/p>\n

Glimmering most of all, at least in the eyes of this patriotic American, were the dozens of stars and stripes honoring our countrymen who shed blood to hold back Russia\u2019s invasion. Almost all were former veterans of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. After a week in Kyiv, I have already met several.<\/p>\n

A disproportionate number of American sacrifices seemed to be from ex-Marines. The flag of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) is not a rare sight in Ukraine. It flies from small monuments to the honored dead here, but may be seen across the city, such as in the center of Punisher, a tactical gear shop at the entrance of Kyiv\u2019s Pasazhyrski train station.<\/p>\n

Daniel, a worker at the American-themed Punisher store, summed it succinctly. For Ukrainians, \u201cAmerica is cool.\u201d He explained that the flag of the USMC in his store was a gift from an American Marine who was visiting in support.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve run into living volunteers from America, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and France in my short time in Kyiv. One Marine Corps veteran from New Mexico decided to settle here permanently, wryly remarking to me that \u201cUkraine is just America in the 2010s, before everything became woke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike 2010s America, Ukraine is fighting on the home front, with Russian attacks near-daily on the frontline of Western Civilization.<\/p>\n

Ukrainians are proud of their ability to buck the widespread international expectation that they would collapse in the face of Putin\u2019s aggression. Biden\u2019s Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, predicted that Kyiv would fall in three days: 1,642 days have passed since then. While most American allies, particularly in Europe, have consistently failed to meet their goals for defense or taken the U.S. for granted, Ukrainians are proud that, although they have asked the world for the best tools to do it, their soldiers protect their homeland. As one proud soldier told me, \u201cWe protect Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hundreds of Telegram channels track open-source intelligence (OSINT) live on both the Ukrainian and Russian sides of the conflict. For each moment the ground shakes, a dozen messages will explain the sort of missile launched and whether there are more on the way.\u00a0(RELATED: Drones Are Not Enough)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Russian channels, audiences tend toward gloating. Even a Russian moderator had to intervene for appearances after the mass mocking of civilian deaths after a Russian drone attacked the Sun Gallery shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n

Russian Telegram channels were among the first to assert that Russia had acquired multi-ton long-range ballistic missiles from North Korea. Ukrainian intelligence has now confirmed that Russia possesses the Hwasong KN-30.<\/p>\n

Prior to this, Russia\u2019s air attacks had to make a choice between ballistic missiles with small payloads or larger cruise missiles whose slow speeds hampered the heavy damage they could inflict.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday night, six of the eight cruise missiles Russia launched ended up intercepted by Ukrainian jets. However, a critical lack of Patriot missiles to intercept high-speed Russian munitions means that nearly all ballistic missiles hit their targets.<\/p>\n

In my time here, I have been to the sites of apartment buildings, factories, and a children\u2019s hospital destroyed in Putin\u2019s air war. Lutheran, Orthodox, and Catholic clergy I spoke to all expressed dismay at the damage Russian attacks have done to churches across denominations.<\/p>\n

Following a particularly heavy night of attacks on Wednesday, I spent much of Thursday in Western Kyiv, boarding up windows in one of the city\u2019s many Soviet-era apartment buildings. My American friends expressed shock that residents would seek to return, but the elderly couple inhabiting one apartment I worked in simply had nowhere else to go.<\/p>\n

The work of volunteers was interrupted by an evacuation to a bomb shelter as a daytime attack shook the ground. I was initially incredulous, certain that the Russians would not strike the same site twice, only to be told by first responders that \u201cdouble-tapping\u201d to knock out first responders was common practice.<\/p>\n

The past two days have been quieter than most, largely due to the presence of a litany of foreign delegations, the most prominent of which is the presence of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, a Catholic conservative and ally of Ukraine\u2019s struggle. They are here to join in the commemoration of 35 years of Ukrainian independence on Aug. 24; coincidentally, the date also marks exactly four-and-a-half years since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022.<\/p>\n

Independence Day, however, also brings the threat of heavy shelling from Russia, which marked the holiday with a barrage of attacks in 2025. Patriot missiles have proven to be lifesavers, however, and the country recently succeeded in acquiring hundreds more from Germany as President Zelenskyy, embattled politically, strives to purchase them from additional partners.<\/p>\n

The White House\u2019s art of the deal could mean salvation is around the corner. President Zelenskyy has suggested that he is in talks with American leadership and has offered to purchase 5 percent of the U.S. Patriot missile stock. Nonetheless, until Patriot supplies grow substantially, Kyiv will continue to live in Putin\u2019s crosshairs.<\/p>\n
