Why? Because I don’t like to give time to a magazine that hideously invokes the name of the monsters who guillotined tens of thousands in the streets of France between 1793 and 1794. There’s nothing cute about that damned name. Nonetheless, the magazine is — sadly, revealingly — an influential left-wing journal, and its interest in the not-so-new notion of municipal socialism, focused particularly on Zohran Mamdani, merits our attention if only to know what the hell these people are up to.

Read more There Used to Be a Barn Here…

Hell is not the image invoked by the Jacobin for Mayor Mamdani’s master plan for the masses. Rather, heaven is. Or at least utopia. It’s fitting and funny that the cover of the special issue features an image of Mamdani multiplied several times over as he greets the masses in various shining manifestations on the streets of New York.

In addition to Zohran Mamdani in New York City, a new generation of literal democratic socialists … are looking to get elected as mayors to manage the means of production.

Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes to satisfy the hungry. Jacobin has multiplied Mamdani. On the intrepid Jacobin cover, one beaming Zohran offers his hand to a bespectacled man and wife and child. They smile. Another Zohran generously reaches out to a citizen dressed in blue. He listens. Still another benevolently shakes the hand of a cab driver. In a fourth Zohran kindly engages a bus driver. A fifth bends over to hear a child. No doubt to heal the boy. And on and on. There are more Mamdanis still. Not unlike Jesus, this socialist can come to more than one person at once.

Alas, this is typical of socialists. Socialism, like communism, is a secular faith. According to Marxist theory, socialism is the final transitionary step to communism, which in turn ushers in the earthly utopia.

“Once we unite and live in communism, hell will no longer be on earth and heaven will no longer be beyond this world,” averred Moses Hess in his A Communist Credo (1846). “Everything which has been presented to us by Christianity in prophecy and phantasy is about to be wholly realized in the true human society according to the eternal laws of love and reason.”

Or consider ex-communist Arthur Koestler’s description in The God That Failed (1949):

To say that one had “seen the light” is a poor description of the mental rapture which only the convert knows.… The new light seems to pour from all directions across the skull, the whole universe falls into pattern like the stray pieces of a jigsaw puzzle assembled by magic at one stroke. There is now an answer to every question, doubts and conflicts are a matter of the tortured past…. Nothing henceforth can disturb the convert’s inner peace and serenity — except the occasional fear of losing faith again, losing thereby what alone makes life worth living, and falling back into the outer darkness.

Yes, the faith of communism, a utopian vision. Listen to the words of Karl Marx himself in The German Ideology (1845): “In communist society, where nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticize after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, herdsman or critic.”

This Marxian mindset is very Mamdanian: If the managers could be merely given the power to regulate the general production then, presto, like in one magic stroke, all the stray pieces of the jigsaw puzzle are assembled and the tortured past is gone. The key, as Ronald Reagan once ridiculed this sophistry in his October 1964 “Time for Choosing” speech, is simply to let the managers manage. That’s the key to the temple.

And alas, despite the many pages of claptrap in the Jacobin’s special print edition, and regardless of all the socialist naval gazing and snake handling, the not-so-clever moniker “municipal socialism” is nothing more than that: it aims to give enough power to the municipal managers to manage, from the mayor to bureau administrators to the members of the city council. The opening line in the Wikipedia sums it up well with a concise definition: “Municipal socialism is a type of socialism that uses local government to further socialist aims.”

Yep, that’s about it. There’s really nothing new here. It has been tried and tried again. It was certainly tried earnestly by various Fabian socialists in England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some “progressives” in various American cities sought the same. “Progressive” Milwaukee was infamous early in the 20th century for it’s so-called “sewer socialism” (come to think of it, “sewer socialists” strikes me as an ironically good term). The only thing different about the latest socialist iteration — or go at the wheel — is that it has not been pursued vigorously of late in modern America, or at least not until these newest attempts we’re witnessing under the likes of Mamdani in the Big Apple and by socialist mayors elsewhere.

The Jacobin, however, is certainly giving it a big push and packaging it with a pink bow, as witnessed by its many glowing profiles since Mamdani’s emergence last year. These include articles on topics like “sewer socialism,” on municipal socialism’s history in Midwestern cities as diverse as Milwaukee and Hamilton, Ohio and even Butte, Montana, or in unrecognized Europeans towns ranging from Bradford, England to Bielefeld, Germany. These projects are unknown and provincial enough to not immediately scare off modern Americans. The Jacobin can get away with sugarcoating them. Who has heard of Bielefeld, Germany? But what ought to alarm modern Americans is the drivel from the Jacobin about how “Mamdani Can Learn from Latin American Municipal Socialism.”

Read more Bye, Bye, Barney

Really? Do we really want to go there?

Ah, yes, if only we could be like … Caracas. Actually, the magazine points us slightly elsewhere in Venezuela to the small municipality of Torres, which we are told “underwent a radical experiment in democracy, giving residents direct power over the budget.” And guess what? “It worked.”

The Jacobin both marvels and advises: “If you’re looking for successful cases of municipal socialism, Torres, a municipality in the Venezuelan state of Lara, deserves to be high on the list. From 2005 to 2016 Torres was one of the most deeply democratic cities in the world.” It’s almost too good to be true that the Jacobin’s mayoral model in Torres, Venezuela was a Chavez: a fellow named Julio Chavez. The magazine implores Mamdani to look to Chavez.

It’s unclear to me if Julio is related to Hugo. I don’t think he is, other than ideologically related. No matter, the tie that binds is socialism. That’s what matters to Jacobin.

“In fact, there are striking parallels between the rise of Zohran Mamdani and Torres’s mayor Julio Chávez,” observes Jacobin. “Like Mamdani, Julio (as he is universally called in Torres) entered his race for mayor, in 2004, as a long-shot far-left candidate backed by a social movement party and facing the incumbent mayor and other powerful opponents supported by both Hugo Chávez’s national ruling party and local elites. Like Zohran, Julio was given little chance to win, and like Zohran he surprised everyone by doing just that.”

And with that, municipal utopia could commence in Venezuela. Actually, once the rich are out of the way. Or at least once the rich are tamed, controlled, redistributed.

The rich are a special target of socialists and the Jacobin.

The Jacobin special edition on municipal socialism includes a piece on how “The Rich Broke NYC.” You can be sure that as Zohran Mamdani further makes NYC broke, the sewer socialists will sling the blame at the rich, even as they’ve chased so many of the capitalist reptiles out of Manhattan. But of course, the vanishing prosperity will never be the fault of the socialists. (READ MORE: Imagine a Better World: More Rich People and Fewer Mamdanis.)

The better question that the municipal managers never seem to quite figure out is why their socialist attempts always fail to produce prosperity. You would think they would learn. But the true believer, of course, never doubts the faith, for fear of losing thereby what alone makes life worth living and falling back into the outer darkness.

So, instead, to quote Reagan, “the more the plans fail, the more the planners plan.” In the end, the planners believe that they failed not because of them and their secular creed but because of you, the stingy, stubborn, greedy voter or taxpayer who selfishly never gave the managers the means to manage and give you the utopia that you’re too stupid to see glistening just over the horizon — or the Hudson.

As for New York City, we shall watch and see.

Unfortunately for the voters in those cities who didn’t vote for this madness, they’re about to be punished by it. Mamdani was elected in New York not by lifelong residents, not by Catholics and Jews, but overwhelmingly by white, woke women ages 18-30 who have been residents for less than five years. This is their doing. This is their “municipal socialism.”

And alas, this phenomenon is not merely infecting the Big Apple. In addition to Zohran Mamdani in New York City, a new generation of literal democratic socialists — members of the Democratic Socialists of America — are looking to get elected as mayors to manage the means of production from Seattle to Los Angeles to Burlington, Vermont and more. We will see that their “new socialism” is no different than the old socialism. Socialism at the local level fails just as it fails at the national level.

They and the Jacobin and their ilk want to rebrand it “municipal socialism.” In truth, it’s just moronic idiocy.

Read more A Cancer Within Diaspora Communities

READ MORE from Paul Kengor:

To Hell With Karl Marx

Weird Ted Turner, RIP

Pope Leo XIV on Immigration: Order, Dignity, and Misconception

[33

post-139","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-commie-watch

The Moronic Idiocy of ‘Municipal Socialism’
