S<\/span>pain\u2019s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez and Spain\u2019s Supreme Court ignited a migrant invasion of Spanish territory from Morocco. News reports estimated the number of migrants crossing into Spain\u2019s city of Ceuta at 60,000. Other migrants from Morocco tried to cross into Melilla, another Spanish territory located on the tip of North Africa. There were clashes with police and several migrants drowned. The death toll is currently at 72.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez\u2019s government initiated a program to grant legal status to undocumented migrants in Spain, and Spain\u2019s Supreme Court has imposed limits on law enforcement\u2019s ability to summarily remove migrants who are intercepted at sea. The S\u00e1nchez government, the AP reports, \u201cmoved to give residency and work permits to hundreds of thousands of migrants already living in the country without permission.\u201d\u00a0(RELATED: Spain\u2019s Demographic Suicide: A Generational Error Europe Will Not Undo)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spanish police and elements of Spain\u2019s armed forces were sent to Ceuta to restore order. Press reports say that many of the migrants returned to Morocco while others remained in Ceuta, but what critics are calling a migrant \u201cinvasion\u201d of Spanish territory caused other European leaders to pledge to impose greater restrictions on people from Spain who attempt to enter their countries. The New York Post<\/em> reports that crossing attempts continue.<\/p>\n

In Spain, conservative leaders accused S\u00e1nchez of \u201callow[ing] Spain to be invaded through Ceuta.\u201d President Trump told reporters that the migrant crisis in Spain \u201clooks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people,\u201d and he warned the American people that similar invasions will happen in the United States if the Democrats control Congress as a result of the November midterm elections.\u00a0(RELATED: I\u2019m a Spanish Taxpayer. The migrant invasion from North Africa may cause some Spaniards to remember one of the country\u2019s greatest heroes: Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as El Cid. Rodrigo was a Castilian mercenary who became a defender of Spain and the Christian Faith against Moorish hordes who attempted to retake the Spanish coastal city of Valencia in 1094. This battle, which is depicted in a somewhat ahistorical manner in the 1961 epic film El Cid<\/em> (starring Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren), saved Valencia and parts of Spain for a while from Islamic marauders from North Africa. A renewed Moorish attack four years later succeeded in recapturing Valencia in 1102. Rodrigo had hoped to aid in its defense again, but died in 1099.\u00a0(RELATED: How Islam Conquered Catholic Spain \u2014 Again)<\/strong><\/p>\n

After his death, Rodrigo was immortalized as El Cid in poems (\u201cThe Song of the Cid\u201d) and plays (\u201cLe Cid\u201d) and a chronicle of his life titled \u201cHistorica Roderici.\u201d In the 1961 movie, El Cid is incorruptible, patriotic, and heroic. In the movie\u2019s climactic scene, the deceased hero is mounted on his horse and leads the Spaniards to victory over the Moors outside a castle at Valencia. The story of El Cid, therefore, is part history, part legend. But it is a legend that may resonate with contemporary Spaniards who just witnessed a North African migrant invasion of Spanish territory.<\/p>\n

The migrant invasion of Spain will likely play into the ongoing debate over the future legal status of illegal aliens who were allowed into the United States by the millions during the Biden administration. President Trump\u2019s call for the mass deportation of illegal aliens has been opposed by most Democrats and some Republicans. The State Department issued a level 3 travel advisory for Ceuta. The scenes from Ceuta are reminders of what it was once like on the U.S. southern border. Illegal immigration may once again become a key issue in the midterm elections this November.<\/p>\n

But the greater political ramifications will be in Europe. The New York Times<\/em> headlines that Europe\u2019s \u201cFar Right\u201d political leaders are setting the tone on Spain\u2019s migrant crisis. NPR opines that in Spain S\u00e1nchez is facing his biggest political challenge. And I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see some of Spain\u2019s populist conservatives invoke the name of El Cid.<\/p>\n
