{"id":1205,"date":"2026-07-28T08:37:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T08:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationallogisticspost.com\/?p=1205"},"modified":"2026-07-28T08:37:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T08:37:23","slug":"congressional-hearing-over-smithsonian-wokeness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationallogisticspost.com\/?p=1205","title":{"rendered":"Congressional Hearing Over Smithsonian Wokeness"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p><span><span>O<\/span>n Tuesday, House Republicans on the Oversight Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency sharply questioned Anthea Hartig, Director of the National Museum of American History (NMAH). Lawmakers scrutinized whether the taxpayer-funded institution has distorted the history of America\u2019s past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationallogisticspost.com\/?p=1203\">No Social Media Without Papers?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Subcommittee Chairman Tim Burchett (R\u2013Tenn.) contrasted the museum\u2019s approach with the story of America as \u201cthe birth and growth of a great nation, founded on powerful ideals, in which we aim to fully achieve.\u201d Instead, he argued, the museum presents American history principally as an \u201congoing power struggle between oppressors and the oppressed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Five Republican committee members questioned Hartig during the hearing. The most interesting <\/span><span>exchange came from Rep. Brandon Gill<\/span><span> (R\u2013TX), who zeroed in on the museum\u2019s embrace of critical theory materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gill pressed Hartig on whether the museum considers \u201cobjectivity\u201d to be a main goal of preserving history. After she answered in the affirmative, Gill responded, saying the museum\u2019s MASS action toolkit cites \u201cobjectivity\u201d as a tool of white supremacy. Considering all of this, Gill took a stab at the inconsistency, \u201cDo you think it\u2019s the goal of the Smithsonian to promote white supremacy culture?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gill went on to ask a seemingly obvious question, \u201cIs Mickey Mouse racist?\u201d Hartig replied that the cartoon character is indeed rooted in \u201cminstrelsy,\u201d which in turn is rooted in blackface and therefore carries \u201cobvious racial undertones.\u201d At the end of his questioning, Gill noted \u201cpoliteness\u201d is considered part of white supremacy culture according to the museum MASS action toolkit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The hearing followed a 162-page White House Domestic Policy Council <\/span><span>report<\/span><span> published on July 4 titled <\/span><i><span>Saving America\u2019s Story<\/span><\/i><span>. The report accused the museum of elevating political activism above an accurate retelling of American history, and of straying from its founding mission: \u201cto instill in each citizen a deepened faith in our country\u2019s destiny as champion of individual dignity and enterprise\u201d and \u201cto instill in each foreign visitor admiration and respect for our ever-expanding social and technological horizons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationallogisticspost.com\/?p=1201\">The Spy Island Next Door<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Director Hartig, who has led the NMAH since 2019, frames American history as a \u201cprime tool of social justice,\u201d aimed to connect \u201cresearch and scholarship to activism and advocacy.\u201d She also stated she works \u201cto reframe the traditional celebratory narrative of U.S. history for visitors,\u201d according to the White House report. The report characterized those\u00a0 statements as words of \u201can activist advancing an ideological agenda contradictory to the Museum\u2019s founding purpose of fostering patriotism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the semiquincentennial of America\u2019s founding, what proves most disappointing about the NMAH is not just what it chooses to display but what it chooses to omit. During the America 250 celebration, one might reasonably expect to see exhibits honoring the early history of America. Yet there are no such exhibits, as the White House report states, \u201ca visitor to the Museum today will find no major exhibit dedicated to America\u2019s Founding era, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, other Founding Fathers, the Continental Congress, etc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later in the hearing, <\/span><span>Rep. Nancy Mace (R\u2013SC) questioned<\/span><span> Hartig over the museum\u2019s <\/span><i><span>Girlhood (It\u2019s Complicated) <\/span><\/i><span>exhibit, asking why taxpayer dollars funded sexually explicit displays to children walking past public galleries. The exhibit specifically contained photos of transgender women and bondage attire, along with many other things clearly inappropriate for a public museum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What was Hartig\u2019s defense? Why, a disclaimer sign was placed outside the door, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The hearing laid bare the clear fact that Hartig, the leader of the institution entrusted to preserve our heritage, cares little for historical objectivity or celebrating our country.
