W<\/span>hile there were many highlights to the FIFA <\/span>World Cup final<\/span> between Spain and Argentina, one of the most captivating elements of the game was the presence of <\/span>Lamine Yamal <\/span>\u2014 Spain\u2019s 19-year-old superstar. He joined the ranks of Barcelona at the age of 15, won a victory for Spain in UEFA Euro 2024 and made a major contribution to Spain in the World Cup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yamal is of Moroccan heritage on his father\u2019s side and Equatorial Guinean heritage on his mother\u2019s. Despite being eligible to play for either of these countries, he chose to represent Spain \u2014 the nation he was born and raised in. Nonetheless, he often <\/span>embraces both sides<\/span> of his heritage on the field by wearing uniquely tailored boots that display the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a crowning victory to a career that has only begun to blossom, Yamal celebrated in Madrid with his team as the World Cup champions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Even from infancy, soccer has always been in Yamal\u2019s life. When he was a baby, his family won a raffle and was <\/span>featured in pictures<\/span> with a charity calendar that Barcelona partnered with UNICEF in. Lionel Messi, who was a young star player for Barcelona at the time, posed holding the young Yamal. Eighteen years down the road, Messi commented on the <\/span>ironic manner<\/span> in which life unfolded, \u201cI had my photo taken with him when he was a baby, and here we are today, the two of us going up against each other in a World Cup. It really is crazy, but he\u2019s one of the best in the world right now, without doubt, and I wish him the very best of luck because his success will be Barcelona\u2019s success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jordi Roura, the former director of <\/span>Bar\u00e7a\u2019s academy,<\/span> told <\/span>ESPN<\/span>, \u201cWhen he was six, we received a report from a scout in Mataro.\u2026 He told us about this kid who was different to everyone else in his age group and recommended we followed him\u2026. A few days later, after reading the reports, we invited Lamine and some other kids to play a game at the Ciutat Esportiva to see them up close. People think you can discover a phenomenon by watching them once, but it\u2019s not quite like that. He had good ball control, a lot of pace, and his execution was very good. We decided it was worth betting on him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

By 2023<\/span>, Yamal had played 249 games and made 357 goals total with Barcelona\u2019s youth academy teams in addition to his five first-team appearances. Albert Puig, who coached Yamal at Bar\u00e7a in his earlier years with the club,<\/span>said<\/span>, \u201cI coached Lamine with the U9s and later with the U13s\u2026. What surprised me most with him is not that he was already a lot better than the rest of his teammates in both age groups, but that as time has passed, rather than things balancing out, which usually happens, Lamine stood out even more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Roura commented,<\/span> \u201cWe brought Lamine to live [at La Masia] to be able to control his diet, his rest and his workload\u2026. And also so he could relax and maintain his focus.\u201d In this environment, Yamal was able to pour his energy into soccer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2014,<\/span> he joined the Barcelona youth academy at the age of seven. With <\/span>incredible achievements<\/span> to his name at the age of 19, he made his senior debut with Barcelona at the age of 15 and contributed greatly to the victory of La Roja in UEFA Euro 2024. A prized player for Spain, he became the <\/span>nation\u2019s youngest<\/span> player and goalscorer to date when he was only 16.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although his soccer career has taken him across the world, he has continued to carry his neighborhood in <\/span>Rocafonda, Spain,<\/span> in his heart. When he scores, he can often be seen putting up the sign 304 with his hands, representing the last three numbers of Rocafonda\u2019s postal code. The people of the neighbourhood adore him, and in turn he remains faithful to them and to his home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yamal is also a devout Muslim; after he made his first goal in the World Cup against Saudi Arabia, he celebrated by performing the <\/span>sujood,<\/span> which is the custom of lying prostrate during Muslim prayer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after the whistle blew announcing Spain the World Cup champion, Yamal and Messi shared a hug. <\/span>Yamal commented<\/span> afterwards about Messi, \u201c[He\u2019s] The best in history and someone I\u2019ve always admired. At the end of the match, I showed him my respect\u2026 He told me to keep going my way and that the future belongs to our generation. Those words mean as much to me as the gold medal around my neck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
