Aside from precedent, Donald Trump’s polling gives them even more room to work with. Yet recent surveys suggest Democrats are underperforming badly enough that the wave they were counting on might not materialize.

That underperformance could cost them control of the House.

If Republicans hold the House this November, the reasons will be obvious: a socialist insurgency reshaping the party from within, and a singular obsession with opposing Trump that has crowded out everything else voters actually care about.

The evidence is already sitting in the polling.

On the generic congressional ballot, Republicans are either tied with Democrats or ahead by three to four points, nowhere near the margin Democrats need to flip the House. A recent Washington Post/Ipsos poll put Democrats up just 48 percent to 45 percent on that same generic ballot question. Asked which party they agree with more on the issues that matter to them, voters split 41 percent Republican to 40 percent Democrat. Asked which party they trust more to handle the economy, the gap widened: 39 percent for Republicans to 35 percent for Democrats.

Along with that rather underwhelming showing thus far comes what comes off as pre-recriminations. But I’ll offer the reader a little more than that.

First, if I were to start to observe this at 50,000 feet up, what I would say is you’re seeing a theory I’ve been writing about for four or five years now and described explicitly in my book The Revivalist Manifesto come to fruition. Namely, that we’re in a new era of American politics, having just in the past few years vacated the one which began with Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s victory in the 1932 election and the passage of the New Deal. We’re no longer volleying back and forth about the methods by which social goods agreed upon by both sides are distributed. The days of William F. Buckley and Daniel Patrick Moynihan having polite conversations over cocktails in tony salons are long gone. That was the Third Era. Now we’re in the Fourth Era, and the next consensus in American politics has not been fully set.

And I would further say that the Buckleys and Moynihans are no longer in position to reset the political consensus. I would argue that Buckley himself would reject, on ideological grounds, the Republican establishment which had so badly faltered when Donald Trump came along to replace it. Whether he would reject John Cornyn or Bill Cassidy, as Republican voters have, is a debatable, if purely academic, question: Cornyn and Cassidy, and lots of others of their ilk, are rapidly receding out of political prominence and that’s largely a good thing. (RELATED: Bye, Bill)

But on the Democrat side, the Moynihans are similarly vanishing. A perfect example is the incredible shrinking Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, who is in the middle of open warfare with the unhinged Liz Warren over the future of the Democrats’ Senate caucus. Warren seems to be winning the majority of the battles in that war, though it isn’t particularly likely that’s going to hold up in November given the rather exotic nature of the people she has endorsed.

Not that Moynihan would be particularly impressed with Schumer, who can’t cease to dumb down American politics with expressions of hyperpartisanship almost anybody could see were dishonest and unproductive. I could give dozens of examples — a latest one from last week appeared in Friday’s Five Quick Things. (RELATED: Five Quick Things: The Increasing Performative Stupidity of Our Friends on the Left)

Read more Andrew Burnham Is the New UK Prime Minister

But the main point I would make is that if the Joneses, Metzls and Schumers of the world are lamenting the rise of outright anti-American communists as the active ingredient in their party, it’s a bit late in the game. (RELATED: Yes, They’re Communists, and Yes, They’re Lying About It. What’s clear about Piker is that he hates this country as founded, and furthermore he hates the party he’s exhorting his followers to seize control of. A quote from that rant, given as it was with air supplied by lungs wrapped in a Mao costume…

No more to Trumpism. They should never have given him ballot access. He wasn’t a Democrat. He still isn’t. But his little wannabe commissar clown-car minions all are.

That decision had consequences. Now Gordillo’s got more influence in New York City politics, it seems, than Chuck Schumer does.

None of this was an accident, and none of it was difficult to predict.

For 20 years we’ve watched the Democrats abandon the idea of finding the center of American politics and/or winning political arguments on the merits. Bill Clinton’s tactics for doing those things weren’t generally the most honest, but at least the centrist/New Democrat posture was his game. But from the time Barack Obama ascended to the top of the Democrats’ food chain, it’s been a community-organized party which cultivated and coddled every left-wing radical, dysfunctional loon, miserable sorehead, and easily-manipulated fringe dunce it could find.

Under the theory that if you hype up the losers in society with enough volume and consistency, and amplify the effect of that by trashing election integrity and manipulating the political process in absurd ways, you can win elections on pure turnout. (RELATED: Maybe Shut Up, Elissa)

Especially if you can import an electorate from Third World hellholes where the politics of envy and theft is just how it goes.

And then, with that toxic stew of a turnout model, you can drag patently un-American ideas into the Overton Window — and use those ideas to demoralize the other side.

The last part worked exceptionally well for them when it was the John McCains and Bill Cassidys who populated the bulk of GOP politics. It took the “You’re Fired!” guy from The Apprentice to put a stop to sexually confused men in women’s dressing rooms at Target, for crying out loud.

But this was always too smart by half. Letting the rabid dogs run free in the yard was always going to be a threat to the homeowner before the mailman or the neighbor’s kids. So if Van Jones is alarmed by Gustavo Gordillo or Darializa Avila Chevalier, then the question to ask is “Why weren’t you alarmed by Liz Warren and Bernie Sanders? Where did you think that was going?”

Van Jones now says that no-borders is insanity and he won’t be party to that. Well, of course it is. Except Van Jones spent the entirety of Donald Trump’s first term crying crocodile tears over patent dishonesty like “kids in cages” or raising hell about the “Muslim travel ban” — a commonsense measure which stopped immigration from countries the State Department had no real ability to vet migrants from in order to weed out terrorists.

His current rejection of open borders reeks of dishonesty. You might think no-borders DSA rhetoric is insane for reasons beyond that it’s toxic to a general electorate, Van, but you always knew that’s what the radicals in your party were pushing — because they’ve been pushing it for two decades. And yet you couldn’t find any immigrant enforcement actions you were willing to defend. So now you’re surprised that the radicals have won? Well? You can’t beat something with nothing, Mr. Nothing, and a decade of Trump Derangement Syndrome as a substitute for a legitimate policy agenda will sooner or later turn out the voters you need to keep the Maoists from routing you out of your power centers.

Which is where we are.

I have zero sympathy for these people. They created this gain-of-function stupid-communist incursion into American politics, thinking it wouldn’t make them sick. Now that they’re on a ventilator and, apparently, are soon going to be asking Republicans to keep them on life support somehow, the answer has to be that “you made this mess, you clean it up. Take your party back and drive these people out of the institutions you gave to them.
