O<\/span>n Monday, July 20, Andrew Burnham became prime minister of the United Kingdom, promising \u201ca new political model and a new economic model\u201d for the country. Public support for Burnham\u2019s differs greatly from that of the historically unpopular former Prime Minister Keir Starmer.\u00a0(RELATED: Five Quick Things: The Bell Tolls for Keir Starmer)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Starmer saw a sharp decline in public approval after many political issues, including news released concerning his U.S. ambassador, Peter Mandelson, who leaked sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein. After these scandals, the Labour Party lost many elections in May 2026. Then Starmer decided to resign due to intraparty pressure and the belief that he could no longer successfully lead the party. Although Burnham is not internationally well known, he has become well liked in the U.K. for his leadership as the former mayor of Greater Manchester, also known as the birthplace of the working class. In this office, employing his new economic model he coined \u201cManchesterism,\u201d which is, as he calls it, \u201cbusiness-friendly socialism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Burnham said he seeks to do similar things as prime minister, as he stated in his acceptance speech on Monday to a crowd on Downing Street. In his address, Burnham promised to bring more political stability to Britain, and put a stop to the rapid revolving door of prime ministers. He acknowledged, \u201cI am the sixth person in the last 10 years to walk up this street. The seventh prime minister since 2016, making this a moment for reflection and new resolution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Burnham claimed, \u201cIn the 1980s, Britain took some wrong turns. Political power was centralized. Economic power privatized. Large parts of the country de-industrialized.\u201d He said his administration would fix what he sees as failures of the Conservative Party. Burnham claims he will strengthen the country by fixing the welfare and education systems, although he did not provide any specifics. Later in the year, Burnham said he would release a more thorough 10-year plan, but he also promised work on the cost-of-living situation in Britain as early as tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is Andy Burnham?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Burnham was born in a suburb of Liverpool to parents who worked as a telephone engineer and a receptionist. Burnham spent his early years raised in blue-collar northern England. Because of his background, Burnham has promoted himself as a fighter for the working class of England.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burnham studied English at the University of Cambridge, where he also met and married his wife, Marie-France van Heel, of Dutch descent.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2001, he was elected to serve as a Labour Party member of Parliament representing portions of northern England. Burnham continued in that role for 16 years. Then in 2017, Burnham won the seat for mayor of Greater Manchester. In June 2026, Burnham returned to Parliament, winning a by-election seat for Makerfield.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burnham was officially made prime minister on July 17, and he \u201ckissed hands\u201d with King Charles III before his acceptance speech on July 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burnham\u2019s election has reversed some of the damage the Labour Party has experienced in the polls. This lack of trust in the party stemmed from multiple failed administrations of former prime ministers, including Keir Starmer. Time will tell if Burnham\u2019s administration is any different.<\/span><\/p>\n
